The three fandoms Fangirl (Rainbow Rowell); Carry On (Rainbow Rowell); and Simon Snow Series (Gemma T Leslie) are a bit of a meta-mess. In brief, Fangirl is a novel concerning a young woman who writes fan fiction in a made-up fandom about a Harry Potter-like character named Simon Snow, supposedly written by a fictitious author named Gemma T Leslie. Based on the fragments of Simon Snow fic in Fangirl, "real" fanfic about Simon Snow began appearing after the novel became popular. To complicate matters, the author of Fangirl just wrote a new novel called Carry On, which is actually ABOUT the Simon Snow world. So, what to do? Fangirl, Carry On, and the Simon Snow series all share some of the same nominated characters. My feeling is that Fangirl needs to stand on its own as a fandom, because it contains characters not part of the Simon Snow world, but that the Simon Snow series nominations should be folded into Carry On, just for the sake of tidiness. When the Simon Snow series fandom was created. there wasn't a "real" Simon Snow ( ... )

Having only read Fangirl and not Carry On, I think it makes more sense to keep the Simon Snow tag separate, so that people who want to read/write about the Simon Snow characters as they appear in Fangirl can use it.

I guess I wasn't clear. I agree that we should keep Fangirl as a separate tag, so people can write about the Simon Snow characters based on that. But I don't see the point of having both Carry On and Simon Snow Series, since Carry On takes its place.

Actually, not exactly. Per Ms. Rowell's Web site (emphasis is from the original):

The most common question I’ve been asked is whether I’m writing as Cath or as Gemma T. Leslie … The answer is, I’m writing as me.

After I finished writing Fangirl, I kept thinking about Simon and Baz and the World of Mages … I wanted to write more about them, but I didn’t want to write the full series GTL-style. And I also didn’t want to write through Cath’s hands and brain.

I wanted to explore what I would do with this world and these characters.

Now Rowell goes on to say that she therefore thinks her novel is canon. I count that as a slightly confusing formulation, because the full quote clearly establishes that it's not canon with respect to the series as by Gemma T. Leslie. With respect to Leslie's series, Rowell's novel is arguably fanfic (and by extension, the Simon Snow series, as by Leslie, is a valid Yuletide fandom). OTOH, Rowell's ( ... )

Not the nominator, but it looks like there might be two tags for a single character under Don Quixote (in the Books category)?

There's both

Duke (Don Quixote - Miguel de Cervantes)

and

Duke - (Don Quixote - Miguel de Cervantes)

My apologies if this has already been mentioned somewhere I didn't notice.

Yes, helpful. That is actually the remnant of an earlier correction. I'll add it again.

Nope! Perfectly sensible. You're actually right. I didn't transfer it from the part of the spreadsheet to do with resolved discussions to the part that counts corrections. Please feel free to ask again if it doesn't show up by the 17th.

I know this was already discussed in the previous post, but I wanted to see if a change could be made to the Borderlands characters. As a caveat ( ... )

I can appreciate these points - but in this case, we do know that the four Tales characters were nominated under Tales, and no one else was, so in this case we are simply restoring things to the way the nominators wanted them. Because of that, and because the way the fandoms were nominated does seem to make sense, we are reluctant to change these two sets further.

Ah, well, that makes sense. I know it's a convoluted fandom so I just wanted to check on it. Thanks again!
