Update On Comments

Update from OD about comments:

After some investigation it looks like we might be able to import comments as well. These comments would be imported as anonymous comments on the imported work. If a commenter would like their comment removed after the import, please contact Open Doors with a link to the work, the content of the comment, and a brief ( Read more... )

I'm not super techy, and you've probably already considered this, but:

Since you can't repost comments from the original commenter, maybe you can create a script that will take the name of the commenter and add it to the comment somehow?

Again, I have no idea if this is possible.

Also, thanks so much for your hard work!

All anon comments on AO3 have a name attached (anon meaning not signed in in this case), so I assume that the name is going to be set to the name of the commenter.

I'm not techy, but - is it possible to import / merge comments together if you, I don't know, treat the stories as two chapters of the same work, and then later delete one chapter? I imported my fic very early on so don't want to lose the comments / kudos / bookmarks already there, but wouldn't want to lose the imported comments if that is possible...

The short answer is not with the current code. And anything that requires large changes would greatly delay the import.

The longer answer is that I don't know either whether something like that might be technically possible or what the problems with it might be (eg date of work changing, what to do in the case of problems, how to tell if a work is actually the same). I'm also not certainly what happens to comments on a deleted chapter on AO3.

"As of April 2, we are still discussing the issue of manually copying and pasting comments onto an imported work,"

Does this mean that Yuletide Admin and/or Open Doors has a back-up copy of the whole Yuletide website, including all comments pages?

This was in reference to people copying comments onto their stories themselves.

We expect that OD does have a back-up copy in case anything goes wrong with the import.

"We expect that OD does have a back-up copy "

Sounds a bit finger-crossy.

Have authors been individually notified that their stories are about to be moved? I ask because a lot of people don't follow Yuletide Admin except in the pre-Xmas nominations/sign-up period-in which case they may not be aware of the upcoming move, and will therefore not have known of the need to save the comments to their stories.

How long will the old site be up after the move? Or, alternatively, will the Open Doors back-up (if it exists) be available to authors who want to copy comments?.

The old site will not be up after the import. As it says above, comments will be being imported with the works (baring problems). Open Doors will provide people with a copy of the comments if they want the story deleted. People will have to contact OD directly to get a copy of comments.
