Chapter 12
The world seemed to stand still for Kai during the fractions of a second it took for the creature to collapse. One moment he was standing there, shocked at the turn of events, the next he was destroying the tent, his magic effectively slicing at the membrane, tearing it to shreds. The people inside ran in terror. They had no idea what was the cause of everything.
The people ran and no one stood to notice that the man who in the middle of all the chaos had stood suspiciously still was in a blink of an eye, next to the creature in the arena, cradling it. Neither did they notice the pair disappearing.
Kai had rushed forward into the ring and cradled the fragile creature. It truly was a panther, and yet there was just something about it that Kai couldn't place, an unrecognised feeling or memory it stirred within him. He didn't have time to analyse it then. First, he needed to attend to the panther but the tent was about to fall apart and collapse on them and he preferred to work in the sun's soft light. It helped him maintain his focus and recharged him. So Kai cradled the being and using another spell, whisked them out of there.
As soon as they were into the light, he called for his horse. The winged horses responded to any command received from their master, factual or telepathic ones. So the horse flew towards Kai.
The roc had already done a quick analysis of the panther's state. It was extremely week, both magically and physically. It was more than probable that it had been feeding only on its magic, in the lack of proper care and attention, and so once the magic had been depleted, it had no more resources to hang on to life. It was in a critical condition and Kai feared that it was already too late.
The horse came to his side, and Kai extracted his medicine kit. He used the same cream as previously and healed any external wounds he could find. There were plenty of those, marks of whipping and scars from the claws and teeth of other animals. Kai's heart hitched upon seeing the wings that were practically destroyed from all the beating. His salve healed the exterior wounds on the body, but it could not heal the wings.
And the problem wasn't as simple as healing those wounds anyway. The panther's heart had been growing steadily slower even as he was applying the salve. The roc needed to take more drastic action. And yet, he had never been faced with such a situation before and he found himself trembling.
“Mom, why do I have to learn all these things?”
“Because you never know what life has reserved for you, honey.”
“But I almost never leave this castle, what's the point in me learning healing and battle techniques? And how am I supposed to practice them anyway?”
“I know it's difficult, love. But this is knowledge transmitted through the generations. The rocs are good at healing because they have been at it for so long, refining the art, mastering it. It's a process. And how can a king be a king if he doesn't understand what that means?”
Before starting on this journey, Kai had only had a limited amount of practical experience. Oh, he had plenty of knowledge, he could name every single thing that was wrong with his patient and know the way to cure it, if it was possible. And yet knowing did not mean that the patient was cured. It took more than that.
For the first time, Kai got frightened. He realized the magnitude of what he was attempting to do. Not only did he have to somehow restore a type of magic that had nothing in common with his own, but get nutrients into the panther's system, heal the digestive and the circulatory system which had been affected by the strain put on them... The list could go on. There were so many things wrong with the creature that Kai was shocked, frozen with fear, fear that he couldn't do it, that he couldn't save his patient. And knowing that Asagi had screamed at him to save the panther, knowing how an important part it played in their quest, Kai was paralysed by his own helplessness.
It was at that moment that the same stout man, with his red and fat cheeks, his overflowing chin, beady eyes and aquiline nose approached him and started screaming at him. At first, Kai had been so lost in his musings that he didn't even acknowledge what he was being told.
“Why you... who are you? Why are you putting your hands on my property? Oh, I'll give it a proper beating so it knows never to oppose me again.”
Feeling the man getting closer and reaching for the poor thing, Kai's control snapped. All his feelings of powerlessness were combined with his hate for that man, for those who had been in there, allowing such a thing to happen, for those despicable little humans. He wanted to hurt him, the same way they had been hurting others, show them their place. He got up and with an avalanche of incantations, the man was thrown into the air by a dreadful force, causing his leg's bones to break and making him hit his head on the nearest house's wall. Then, the houses around them were pummelled over by the same unforgiving wind and in that process, something caught on fire. The fire spread from house to house, burning everything in its way. People were running in fright, carrying what little things they could, bumping into each other, stomping on each other, trying to get out of the way of the fire. Even in such conditions, humans trampled on those weaker than them. They did not deserve to live. Kai was out of control for he was about to utter one more incantation, that would finish everything, when he saw a child crying in the road, in front of him, crying in front of it's poor friend that had been crushed by one of the falling houses: a dog. The child was crying his heart out for a dog. All Kai's anger left him and the wind stopped and by some miracle, the fire ceased spreading to the nearby homes, feeding on itself, until it died completely. The village was in danger no more by the time Kai had picked up his precious burden and with the speed of a tornado, returned to his travel companions.
“Kai, what happened?” He was greeted with the exclamations of the king and with the stares of Asagi and the other two.
He ignored them, set the panther down and resumed his work. The most difficult part would be trying to somehow transplant magic into it.
“I need to do a magic transplant but there are two problems: one, I've never done it before, not sure if it's even possible since I've never even heard of anyone attempting to do this before, and second, I don't have a donor since I don't know a thing about what are the basic properties of panther magic and compatibilities. Dragon king? Can't you help me out here?”
“I only know about panthers that they are the most sacred beings in the magic realm. But why that is so, I have never been able to learn, especially since there are no more panthers today. Or that's what I thought. He or she must be the last of it's race. I do know that they are creatures of the sun though, for they shine as brightly as it and are as passionate and caring. They inspire life and love in all that encounter them.”
“Since their magic is so powerful, maybe dragon magic would be the best to transplant...” Kai thought.
He was shocked to hear Asagi's next words.
“You need to do it, Kai.”
“What?” The roc whispered, too awed to react in another way.
“It can't be the king or anyone else. You are the only one. And you need to save him.”
“Him?”
“Yes.”
“But how am I supposed to give my magic to him while making the whole thing happen? I'm supposed to make sure nothing goes wrong and...”
“Nothing will, Kai.”
In that precise moment, the panther's heart stopped. And Kai didn't turn the idea in his head anymore. His body and his magic reacted without his mind getting a proper grab on the situation. He put his palms over the panther's chest and simply started pushing magic into him. It looked as if small feathery rays of red light were being absorbed into the panther's body. Kai hadn't even thought such a thing was possible. The transplant he had had in mind involved difficult spells and several assistants to make it work, but this, this was just his instincts getting a hold of him and dictating his actions.
And he could feel it working. He could feel the last shreds of life in that broken body clinging with desperation to these new found rays of hope. He let out a breath he didn't know he had been holding in when the panther's heart resumed it's gentle beating, growing steadier, stronger by the second.
He had been planning on ceasing the transfer once the panther was no longer in danger, but he was shocked to notice that the magic would not let him go; his own magic kept calling towards the other's. And finally, the other's magical core, the only part of the panther's magic that could not be depleted, reacted. It absorbed the roc's magic and just like that, changed it into its own, healing it's vessel more thoroughly than Kai had thought it possible. And it shouldn't have been possible. A mere minutes later and the panther's internal wounds were completely healed; actually, excepting his wings, every other wound had simply disappeared and the poor creature fell into a tired, well deserved sleep. Only then did Kai regain control over himself.
And yet, he couldn't not react to what had just happened. It was nothing less than a miracle.
“Kai, what happened?” The king asked, uncertain upon seeing the roc's uncommon reactions.
“He healed himself, took my magic, converted it into his and healed itself.”
“Is that so shocking?”
Kai nodded, gulped and then continued with his explanation: “Even presuming panther magic would be compatible with mine, this couldn't have happened, because... Whereas healing magic is a special type of magic rocs are familiar with, self-healing magic, the ability to heal one's wounds, it belongs only to the royal family. And it's not like the vampire's self-regenerating ability. It's not genetic, natural, it's learned, mastered through years of training. No, through generations even. There's only one explanation....” It was the explanation Kai had considered all along.
“Teacher, why don't we teach this magic to all rocs? Why keep it hidden inside the walls of the palace?” A very young Kai had asked his master.
“Because even if they spent a life-time trying to learn all the tricks and spells, it still wouldn't work for them. You see, this magic needs perfect control over the mind and body, determination, courage to face death, and, a piece of one of the royal family's members' soul. Without that, all the training in the world would make no difference.”
“Then how come you can use it, master?” A very clever roc had asked.
“That is a story for another time, young prince.”
“Then, if I share my soul with someone, they'd be able to use it?” Excited, Kai asked. “Like all those dear to me, I'm basically entrusting them a piece of myself, aren't I?”
“That's why it takes so much training little one, for sharing your soul with someone is not such an easy thing as you would think. It's different from sharing affections or memories. Deeper. Most of us, beings that roam this world, learn what that feels like only when we have held our first child in our arms...” The old, white roc had said, a nostalgic smile on his lips.
Coming out from his reverie, Kai added, more to himself.
“No, it would still be impossible even if he were my mate, even if our souls were halves of a whole. Because he simply lacks the knowledge.” Kai was thoroughly confused and since there was no way he would wake the sleeping being, he turned towards Asagi, the only one who seemed to have all the answers. His torment must have shown on his face, for Asagi, for once, answered his question:
“Is he my mate?”
“Yes.”
“But how?”
“You were compatible from he beginning, Kai. And then he accepted you completely, his magical core embraced yours; through your magic, he was able to read into your heart and memories. Well, it does help that originally, panthers are the only creatures capable of gazing into others thoughts and feelings as clearly as if it were their own.”
Asagi's words made Kai remember the look the panther had sent him just before his collapse in the tent, the way his whole being had reacted to it. That had been the moment, the moment the panther had entrusted everything to Kai, to his mate. Kai could feel it now, feel the way his very soul trembled with this knowledge and with the sheer joy of finding his half. The roc relaxed and a smile played upon his lips.
“I wonder what his name is.” He thought out loudly. There was no answer.
