Chapter 12

Life seemed back to normal, or at least a new type of normal seeing as these days Uruha and Reita were all cuddly and fluffy. The unending gossip they supplied Ruki and Aoi…

“So Aoi-shi, who do you think is on top?” Ruki asked one day, of course in front of the criminals. Reita was actually sipping his hot cup of coffee when the question came so the coffee ended up on his shirt.

“Well, I put my money on Reita-san. He seems the more manly one.”

Uruha’s gaze turned venomous.

“Now what would you mean by that, Aoi-chan.” Uruha asked.

“Nothing at all.”

“Well, I’d say they take turns. After what I saw in the hospital room I certainly have that impression.”

Reita and Uruha simultaneously coughed. Bingo, Ruki thought. Aoi pouted.

“Ok, Aoi-chan, now you owe me something.”

“But, Ru-chan, we didn’t bet on anything.” Aoi tried to disagree.

“It’s still your loss.”

“Ok, ok. What do I have to do?”

“You know you’ve been hanging around with all these insufferable, brainless women lately?” Ruki started.

Reita just couldn’t help himself: “Lately? More like his whole life.”

“Well, yes. Anyway…” Ruki picked up. “I think that the reason you don’t find a nice woman and get settled down is one out of two. First possibility: you don’t really like women. Second possibility, you haven’t tried to find a nice woman yet.”

“I am definitely not in the closet, Ruki-kun. I see those two smooching all the time but I don’t get urges, if you know what I mean and until now I have never been attracted to any man. Sure I might admire their looks or personality, but it’s nothing more than that. So I’d stick with women. Women, now I just love holding them and spoiling them but I find that our personalities don’t quite match. If it’s a nice, serious lady, she just sees me as a clown, if it’s one of those brainless women you seem to dislike so much, then it’s just physical attraction. In other words, I’m just too complex.”

Ruki huffed.

“You might be a bit unusual Aoi-chan, but you’re not that complex, once the partner gets to know you. The problem is you don’t open up and give them a chance because no matter what you say, they don’t intrigue you enough. So here’s what I want. I’m going to play matchmaker. Once a week, for the next four weeks I get to set you up with someone I choose. Mind you, man or woman. You go out with them and spend the night together. That doesn’t mean you have to have sex. You just spend more than a couple of hours in each other’s company. I think you might just find what you’re looking for.”

“That’s impossible, even for you Ruki-kun. It means I just get a few hours with four different persons. That’s not any different from me dating without your help.”

“Oh, it’s quite different, Aoi-kun. First of all, I know you, so I’m going to pick exactly the type you normally don’t pick because you’re afraid of actually finding the right person. Secondly, you tend to pick your dates judging from the physical aspect. You won’t be able to do that now.”

“I warn you, if they’re some witches I’ll just run away. My eyes are sensitive you know.”

“Oh, come on, who do you take me for? Oh, and the last point. I really suspect your perfect partner would be male or someone with a very strong dominant character but you rarely if never approach either males or strong dominant women so… “

Aoi tried to make it seem like he couldn’t care less, give the impression that he was quite sure of his “complexity”, how he’d like to put it, but truth be told, he was scared, because Ruki just had an eye for people (when others were concerned at least). In order to calm himself a bit, although if asked he’d refuse to admit that was the reason, he went out of the room to smoke a cancer stick. The conversation inside continued.

“Ru-chan, that was pretty tricky.” Uruha said.

“Yeah, well he needs to find himself a nice person to love. I want him happy and even though it seems like he’s goofing around all the time I have this hunch he’s crying inside. I don’t like my friends sad. I already missed up on you guys getting together because I was too wrapped up in my own problems.”

“You don’t need to be concerned about us, Ru. We were quite able to solve this ourselves. Thank God. I don’t even want to imagine what you would have done to get us together.”

“Why, Rei-chan, you know me too well.” Ruki chuckled. “Yeah, so all my evil plans will now be aimed towards Aoi-shi.”

At that moment Kai had to solve some administrative problems so he had to leave the room, providing them the perfect opportunity to discuss another matter.

“How about you, Ru? Playing cupid for everyone is certainly fun, but how about playing it for yourself?”

That had been a bit out of the blue so Ruki had to think hard to find that answer. Reita was right in some sense. What gave him the right to butt in his friends lives if he couldn’t straighten out his own? Kai was there… and maybe it would lead to something. But it was just too soon to think about it that way. First he needed time for all the emotions and facts to settle down, forgive himself and then see where he wanted to take their relationship. He knew Kai would wait.

“I just think there are some things I need to come to peace with before I can concentrate on my own love life. Helping you guys actually makes me feel better, useful. I just hope I won’t mess up and get you guys to hate me or something.”

Aoi had been right out the door and heard the last phrase so he decided to barge in and give Ruki a piece of his mind.

“Haven’t I told you to stop thinking like that? We could never hate you. Be extremely mad at you, want to throw you off mount Fuji or chase you around Tokyo, sure, those are all possibilities. But once we calm down, we’d still give you a bear hug. We love you, Ru. Oh and I will personally cut you into slender pieces if these persons you want to set me up with will make my life a living hell.”

“Don’t worry, Aoi-chan. I’m sure you’ll love what I have prepared for you.”

“Yeah, just as much as I love this headache. God, Ruki-kun, the things you do to me.”

That week was all laughter and fun for the Gazette members, all except Aoi that is, who awaited fearfully the day he’d have his first date with a person picked by Ruki. Practices were going great, the five of them went out and had fun again, which always included a place to eat- it was their duty after all to get Ruki nice and chubby again- and just hang around. And then, Aoi’s long awaited day came.

Next Monday, after practice, Ruki decided to announce:

“Ok, Aoi-shi, since tomorrow we don’t have anything scheduled until seven in the evening, today you have plenty of time to go out on the date I planned for you. I’ll pick you up at your place later. Be sure to dress nice ok?”

Aoi sighed. There really was no getting out of it so he resigned to his fate. He got home, showered, put on some nice clothes, groomed himself and awaited Ruki’s arrival. Ruki came about thirty minutes later with a huge grin on his face and without saying anything just led him to the car and then drove him to a nice restaurant. Once inside, they went to their reserved table and waited.

“Tonight, it’s a she. I thought I’d go easy on you for your first time. Make me proud. Her name is Yuki-chan. She’s a lawyer and a high school friend of mine. The rest I leave up to you to discover. Ah, here she is now. Yuki-chan!”

Aoi turned to meet his date. He couldn’t complain actually. She was pretty. Not beautiful but she certainly had a charming appearance. Not too tall, just fit, with what Aoi could imagine as nice legs. She had short, black hair framing a slender oval face. What was indeed beautiful about her were her eyes. The dark orbs just sparkled with life and excitement.

“Ruki-kun, it’s been so long! I was so surprised when I got your phone! How have you been?”

“Just fine, Yuki-chan. I told you why I asked you out though, right? Here is one of my best friends and band members, Aoi-kun. He’s quite a goof ball but I think you might just be able to handle him. I’ll call you later to know all the details ok? It’s just a date so no need to get defensive. Just have fun, kids.”

And with that the two of them were left alone. Next day, at seven they had scheduled a meeting with an interviewer so all five of them had gathered in the recording room.

“So, Aoi-chan, how was it? I haven’t phoned Yuki-chan yet since I figured I’d give you the honor to tell me first.”

“Well, Ruki-kun, she was pleasant.”

Ruki pouted. “But not enough, right?”

“Her personality is charming, it really is. She was able to handle my jokes and turn them against me, saw right through my weak attempts at making the atmosphere warmer and took on the task herself; she is an interesting person, passionate about her work and what do you know, she loves music.”

“So what don’t you like?”

“It’s not something I don’t like. She really is a great girl and I’d love to become friends with her but the attraction just wasn’t there. She is intellectually dominant, if you will, she has clear convictions and a straight path she wants to walk in life but I think maybe that’s just too much for me. And the attraction just wasn’t there.”

“I see. Actually, it’s not an unexpected result and I bet she’ll pretty much tell me the same things. Ok, I’ll try harder for next week.”

Aoi had relaxed a lot. The date had been fun, sure he hadn’t found his soul mate but he thought that just maybe he had found a new friend and he had to give it to Ruki, he knew how to pick women. Which made him think, exactly why hadn’t he been attracted to her?

Next week turned up to be a veritable beauty, clad in a leather jacket and tight pants that accentuated her beautiful forms. Yeap, he had been attracted. She had felt the same. They had had a nice dinner, pleasant conversation and wound up in bed together. The next morning, when he woke up with her next to him, he had the irresistible urge to just fly out of the room. He restrained himself. It would have been cowardly. But this time too he had to ask himself what the hell he was doing. Why didn’t he like her enough? She surely was perfect. She had an enchanting personality and a sense of humor to rival his own. (She had proven that when playing a prank on the waiter) And she was adventurous. Hell, she owned a bike. She looked at him more like a partner in crime and seemed to understand exactly just what he was thinking. And still… When she stirred next to him, he felt guilty, which again, she must have sensed. Was she a cat or something?

“Aoi-kun, I know. Don’t get me wrong, I like you too and the sex was great but we’re just not meant to be together. “

Aoi didn’t reply and let her go on.

“Want to know why? Deep down inside you’re scared of something, you carry this sadness that you don’t even seem to be aware of most of the times and you’re afraid to even admit it’s there. You need someone to help you heal that and I can’t offer you that because I have not an ounce of “motherness” in me. Once I did. Guess what, Ruki-kun helped me deal with that. Since then, I’ve just lived my life to the fullest, every second of it and I don’t have any regrets. I can’t be the pillar you need. So there really is no reason to feel guilty or anything. I had a great time. And the same applies towards Ruki-kun. I think he has just the perfect person in mind for you but before presenting the one, he needs you to realize a few things about yourself first. I strongly guess the third time won’t turn out differently. She’ll seem perfect but there’s going to be just one trait she lacks. Next time, you’ll need to find it for yourself though.”

She had been right, of course, about everything. The third time it had been an actress, someone who had managed to get over a lot of obstacles to get where she was and had developed a very strong personality thanks to that. There really was no need to add that she was beautiful. It was just that she was too straightforward, quite uncharacteristic for a Japanese actually. But her strong personality just didn’t allow her to be otherwise. She was a pillar, ok, but he’d only turn out to be baggage if he decided to take up her support. She didn’t need him in her life either. And he was a man for God’s sake, he expected his partner to ask for some protection.

Aoi was quite happy that it had turned out to be only women though. Maybe Ruki had just tried to scare him before. Still, after three wonderful women coming into his life one after another and him always finding something wrong, from the first date, might we add, Aoi needed some time alone to think about what he really wanted. So that Friday, after the Gazette completing a photo shoot, Aoi decided to stay behind in the dressing room and do some thinking. Why there? He couldn’t answer. He had his guitar with him (had needed it earlier) and a peaceful warm environment, dare he say, warmer than his home, so he decided half an hour longer wouldn’t bother anyone.

A/N: And here we go... I did warn you this is going to get more complicated. And what do you think? Who will turn out to be Aoi's soul mate? Of course I think you'll be fairly surprised but it doesn't harm anyone of you imagine it a bit, right? Waiting for your love. Squishy hugs.
