Time isn't anywhere near as linear as most like to think.
And you're right, that would be giving the scientists far too much credit -- and on the other hand, you don't think it's incredibly self-demeaning? You have to rely on the actions of others to provide you with the ability to examine yourself? To make yourself into a 'better person'. That's a job that belongs to no-one -- a religious figure, scientists -- except yourself.
That said, people are awfully fond of imagining there's a specific time and place for it beyond their life in the present.
I do take control of my own life. But if there's no reason to start looking in at yourself, why would you? Most people are way too lazy to bother doing that until they're forced to.

I dunno, though; most things need some sort of trigger or catalyst or whatever to get moving. Why shouldn't self-examination be the same thing?
