I have thoroughly enjoyed Pratchett's "Nation" and Gaiman's "The Graveyard Book" or even "Coraline". I don't know what age they are for. They may be too hard or too scary for 8-10 year-olds. (Although The Graveyard Book actually is scary for the humans, not for the ghosts).
Treasure Island is a classic of course - also, probably for older kids.
I'm afraid that's all I can remember in terms of English children's books right now.
I owned an LP once with the story of Peter, a boy of about 10, who is woken one night by a time traveler - also a boy. He is in dire need for liquid mercury to get his craft going again. Peter happens to have an old thermometer he can donate, so he gets a free trip into the past for that. He choses Vienna an Mozart. And of course there is adventure involved before they both go back to their respective time.
I'm sorry I can't remember the name of that book / audio play though.
