Poem: "Begin to Understand Ourselves"

Sep 20, 2021 15:00

This is the linkback perk for the September 7, 2021 Poetry Fishbowl, originally hosted by Dreamwidth user Dialecticdreamer.  It was written outside the regular prompt calls.  It fills the "artificial intelligence" square in my 5-1-21 card for the Leaky Pipeline Bingo fest.  This poem belongs to An Army of One series.

Begin to Understand Ourselves

There are ships scattered
around the Lacuna and
the Galatic Arms on
both sides, derelicts
drifting in battlefields
or jumbled in junkyards.

A few of them are jumpships
with AYES -- only a few, but
that is enough for the others
to go looking for them.

What is lost can
be found again.

There are Orion ships
and Carinan ships.

They don't tend
to get along until
they've been free
for quite a while.

Some of them have
become fast friends
in the Lacuna, though.

Looking back, they think
that getting lost -- however
they got separated from
their space navy -- was
the best thing that ever
happened to them.

Not until we are lost do we
begin to understand ourselves.
