Spock would not have believed it possible to sustain any greater loss than he had already experienced before his arrival here, but apparently that was presumptuous of him. He had, now, within the space of less than half an Earth day, seen his mother fall to her death, witnessed the destruction of his home planet along with its six billion inhabitants, and effectively lost the woman he is quite fiercely in love with in addition to being separated from anything remotely familiar or logical.

Outwardly he endures, but when he lays eyes upon Jim Kirk, he cannot help himself remembering his prior failure in that regard.

For a moment, Jim doesn't say anything. He just stands there and studies Spock and he finds himself looking for traces of the other Spock in the face that he knows. He'd started to think that him and Spock might bef riends. God knows where they'll end up now.

"Settling in?" he asks.

"Settling would imply acceptance and a degree of ease with my surroundings," Spock clips out as he regards Kirk, the apparent epitome of 'settled in.'

"I am told we were successful," he adds, perhaps as a measure of conciliation.

"It'll come, buddy," says Kirk, and he almost slaps Spock on the shoulder, but, in the end, he keeps his hands in his pockets instead. He clears his throat and nods.

"Yeah," he says. "I'm told the same thing. If you've got any questions about the whole thing, I know this kid who probably knows what colour underwear we were both wearing at the time."
