[009] Lika's going to catch everybody up on 3000 years of history.

[audio // EnglishUntil almost 500 years ago, there were no telepaths, at all. Then, during the War, the tunnel drive was invented. The exact events surrounding that are mostly legendary, since the research was conducted in secrecy and no good records survive. The only reliable data is the sensor log from a Martian naval picket that shows the ( Read more... )

I think you've got it a little backwards, there.

And by backwards, I mean completely wrong.

Has no one told you about the "multiple worlds" issue yet?

Sounds like a good movie.

[Pause as Lika figures out what a "movie" is.]

Oh, it's not a movie. It actually happened.

There are other telepaths on board?

There was...a girl, but I haven't seen her in quite some time.

[...Happily.]

That's...kind of a scary origin of your people, you know?

Hmm. I guess it is.

It was a long time ago; tunneling is safe now.

[This is the sound of someone who's never really thought about it.]

Hopefully the painful screaming is a thing of the past as well?

Mostly. Sometimes we get overloaded, but there are drugs for that.

That is... rather strange.

Hello, Mimmi.

Is it? I don't think so. It's something I grew up hearing.

Ah... It still sounds rather painful.

...You do not hurt like that, right?

Oh, no. I'm not sensitive enough to have all the sensory interlinkages. Also, telepaths are born with it, so our brains adapt. The Eight had their neurons suddenly changed as adults, so of course it was traumatic for them.

Huh.

So what's it like for you?

yousoundblue May 8 2009, 23:32:44 UTC
Oh, I don't get sensory overload. I only have color-sound synesthesia. It's the second most common type.

[She says, cheerfully.]

[Ffff, lol wut? What about--but he thought--LADY YOU ARE WEIRD.]

What is it?

An...hell, wha's the most comment type?

[Lika is perfectly normal and the rest of you are weird.]

Synesthesia is a neurological condition where input from one sense triggers other sensory perceptions in the brain. I see colors and shapes when I hear sounds. All telepaths are synesthetic to one degree or another.

The most common kind is grapheme-color synesthesia, where letters all have distinct colors. I don't have that one--it always sounded dull to me, frankly.
