I was at a queer band night the other night* and heard the entirely adorable Liz Cronin sing - not only is she extremely sweet (and more than a little shy) but she has a lovely Scottish accent. Anyway, one of the songs she played has a chorus that goes

I'm 100% certain that there's fic - and a possibly terrifying amount of it - describing that exact encounter between Holmes and Watson in great detail. The fact that I've never read any Sherlock Holmes fanfic does not make me any the less certain of this.

Ah, Freshers' Balls. I remember them. In the entire time I was at university nothing in heaven or hell would have persuaded me to go to one. I was so painfully shy it wasn't even funny and the whole idea just made me want to curl up in a corner. I approve of your choice :)
