So they're gone, Mlle. Da'vid and M. David. He never told me his last name. I feel that I've been somewhat entrusted with a legacy, though ( Read more... )

I don't know about book club, but chess sounds pretty-okay. I'm decent at it. I can help you get integrated into the mastery that it is.

That sounds wonderful. I don't believe we've met before. I'm Armand St. Just. I haven't met many of the newer arrivals.

I'm not exactly new. I just don't get out much, I mean socializing. I guess my warden has been trying to set me up on "play-dates" or whatever the hell it is.

Who is your warden? I suppose I ought to make certain I am not interfering, though I can't think how playing chess would be bad.

A book club? I'd be interested.

Really? You'd be quite an asset for that. It's always good to be able to get people together to talk on a common subject, don't you think?

Oh, I agree!

What are you thinking we should read?

I thought perhaps to start with classic literature, the sort of thing that wouldn't be too offensive and easily available in the library. Are any of our librarians still about?

In the interests of not becoming a complete hermit I'd be interested in joining a book club. The Admiral might be able to provide duplicate copies if the library doesn't have enough.

I hadn't thought about asking about that. It makes sense though. I'd be happy to have you in the club. Another intelligent person to make me look like the village dunce.

I really don't think you'd ever have any claim to that title to begin with, M. St. Just. You've never struck me as anything but an intelligent person.

But you could invite our newest arrival if you're worried.

Do you mean that large man who's obsessed with hunting? Well, he sounds large. I don't think he knows what a book is.

I am flattered by the compliment, but I know that isn't true. Average. I know I'm not stupid, but I feel that way often.

Book Club? That sounds like a good way to blow off steam and get some time to myself. I'm down with that.

Thank you for being interested. I don't know how often we'll met yet or when, but I'll start looking for the first book so people can get started.

I'll admit I'm a stranger to the classics. I haven't had the time to sit around and read a book for a while. I'm looking forward to this.

Some of them are quite good, and I'm hoping to find some interesting things from after my time, so to speak.

Yes, monsieur. Everyone reading the same book and then meeting to share our thoughts on it. Are you interested?

I will be letting people know the first book and when we'll first meet as soon as possible. We can discuss everything else later.
