Book Juggling

Ha, what does it say about me that I'm delighted by Guillotine: It's Legend and Lore but am rather bored by The Diary Of Anais Nin, Volume 4 (1944-1947). I guess I lose girly points or something. Oh well.

I am rather disappointed by Lost by Gregory Maguire. I really enjoyed other books of his (Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of ( Read more... )

That's pretty good. I've tried that, having a book I read only durng the day, and then another right before bed. I can't last!

Hey, I preferred "Band of Brothers" to "Vanity Fair" -- not so unusual for a lady to like some not-so-traditional things!

Lost sounds like it's too much of an amalgamation. Literary reimaginings work best when they focus on one, maybe two subjects at a go.

Lost is a total wreck of a book. I gave up! Fortunately someone on paperbackswap.com wants it, so it will earn me a credit with which I can get another book once I mail Lost out.

Not everything by Nin (or any other writer, for that matter) is interesting/appealing. I know there were some things of hers that I put down.

Hey!

I got about halfway and realized I didn't care. I think I would prefer this book to be diluted down to essay form, the parts when she writes about being a creative person, the creative process, and criticizes American (and bourgeious) culture are very interesting.

I agree. I love Delta of Venus and a lot of the selections from A Journal of love are fantastic, but the thing about the journals is that...they're journals. I'm sure a lot of the stuff was fascinating to her as the person it was happening to, but to the general public, not so much. I think people took her desire to have some ofher journaling released uncensored after her death to mean that every single word of every journal needed to be released, and...again, not so much.
