Torchwood...tell me why you love it

Ok, so I just finished the first season of Torchwood. I didn't love it the way I hoped or expected. The final two eps were the only ones that caught my attention at all. Really, the acting felt mediocre, the characters were not particularly sympathetic, some of the storylines were incomprehensible, and even for sci-fi it just all felt too far- ( Read more... )

As far as Torchwood, you're right; it's completely cheesy and brow-raise worthy. I like how some of the otehr characters get more depth in season two. Ianto, Tosh, Owen - they all get more explorationa and become much less of the people who stand next to Jack and Gwen then they are in season one. I forget, are you watching Doctor Who? The brief crossovers between the two series really keep me interested. If you download eps at all, I can help you find a source for that.

If you're looking for something new, Queer as Folk (US Version) is a slashers' must. Firefly/Serenity is also a favorite. I like Supernatural (although I thought it was better in the earlier seasons, but I think I'm just in a lull in season three). Dead like me was amusing, what I've seen of it. Mijan swears by Scrubs. All tasty alternatives to a social life.

The idea that the other characters get more play in S2 is appealing, I find them more interesting than Gwen. Owen especially intrigues me. I've not seen Dr. Who, but I may have to, just to give myself some background.

I've seen QAF, and Firefly! (yay!). Dead Like Me sounds good, I'll look into that one, thanks.

While I didn't mind doctor who (especially with Nine and Rose), torchwood always seemed a bit...blah. I never got it.

A scifi show with humor would be Stargate SG-1 - though some peeps prefer Stargate:Atlantis. Both are funny in different ways ^_^ The first season of Supernatural is kind of kick ass too. For my serious sci fi, I go for Star Trek Voyager while BSG is my high drama, rollercoaster scifi show.

First season of Rome was gritty but awesome - second season was a bit of a let down though. Dead Like Me was extremely quirky as was Wonderfalls. Just check out all the blurbs and see if anything interests you.

If you ever try anime, you can get the FullMetal Alchemist series on netflix too - the best anime ever IMO and a hit with a lot of people.

(btw, stumbled on this post via friendsfriends list - hope you don't mind me jumping in ^^)

I forgot about the Stargates, they would both probably be good. I like them when I see random eps on tv, I'd probably like them more if I watched in order. BSG and Firefly own my soul, which may be why Torchwood is suffering in comparison.

I'm glad to hear that you liked Rome, that's enough for me, I'm adding it now.

(Happy to have you throw in your two cents, and glad to hear that I'm not the only one that jumps in my friends' flists!)

If you didn't like the first season of Torchwood I wouldn't press you to go on to the second season. I enjoy the series, but I adore the omnisexuality of it most of all; that's what keeps me coming back. Captain Jack is such an affectionate bloke while still being intensely butch--I love seeing him dole out the smooches and the flirtation to everyone with sincere fondness.

In that respect, he truly is interesting to me. He busses people of all persuasions without hesitation, and yet maintains a distance from everyone. I get flashes of genuine wit in this series, but sometimes the camp overwhelms.

I liked the first season, actually, but it's very different from the second. The second season deals with more moral dilemnas and goes to darker places, with more character development. We get to see Ianto being totally kick-arse, and increasingly awesome dialogue. Plus, OMG Captain John. So hot. Jack/John forever!

I'd say: Buffy/Angel, Firefly/Serenity, Doctor Who. I'd say Doctor Who even if you stick with Torchwood, since it adds to Torchwood a lot, and I prefer it anyway.

I like the idea that the second season delves into deeper things and more character development, which are always the parts of the show that keep me coming back.

Everyone keeps me telling me that I really should do the Dr., so I think I'll add the first season of that, and see where it leads me.
