A mentor!hero (of your choice) crossed that thin line of righteous vigilantism. They've defied the golden moral rule and they're not turning back. In fact, their getting worse.
The Justice League (or the Government) decided to take matters into their own hands. That ex-hero must be stopped at all costs. He was wanted: dead or alive.
Cue in the loyal sidekick who sticks with his mentor through all this. He knows that what they're doing is already wrong. This wasn't for justice anymore. But he doesn't leave because his mentor needs him.
Then they were cornered. No way out. A dead end. They were now caught and there's no chance of escape... at least... for one of them.
Here are some clothes, wear them immediately

i can imagine it most easily with Batman and Robin. Batman has always been on that thin line. I imagine if someone close, like Alfred, died, he could be pushed over.
I can also kinda see this happening with Clark and.Conner although the dynamics of what would happen would definitely be different
