Tolerance, a Two Way Street

I am quite saddened by the amount of emotional "debate" over the so-called Ground Zero Mosque.  This really isn't an issue to me, nor should it be to anyone else.  The Constitution is quite clear about it.  Freedom of Assembly, and Freedom of Religion.  Last I looked, Islam is a religion.    The Muslims who want to build their mosque there should ( Read more... )

The grandfather of "that" grandmother of mine has a rather strong opinion on this. He told me that by letting Muslims build a mosque there, we are in essence approving of starving women and children who "lost their breadwinners" in 9-11.

Which is an odd, odd statement on many levels. There are so many layers of crap there.

When I pointed out that the people to blame for 9-11 are not indicative of all Muslims, he snorted. "Never known a good Muslim" he said.

"Do you even know any Muslims?" I asked.

But as far as the starving WASP, good Christian women and children go (none of which died in 9-11, neither did any of Muslim faith or anti-"good ol' boy politikins..." Only good WASP Christian, right wing males perished, ya know?) let's take them on a tour of your revised neighborhood. Bet there's good eatins there.

I am quite glad that your grandfather's mind isn't my parachute. It would not work since it is closed.

Actually I agree with pretty much everything that you're saying. I would volunteer to be one of the pushcart vendors selling smoked pork chop sammiches, barbequed ribs, bacon wrapped pastrami sammiches, etc ( ... )

Actually, I can say it sleep comfortably at night. I have also stated quite clearly that I think the idea behind putting the mosque there isn't a good one. That the people behind it just aren't thinking things through very well ( ... )

I agree that it "could" be illuminating, but in reality I see it as little more than a local issue (New York City) that has been kidnapped by those you so eloquently described earlier.

I don't like bones being thrown to me. I'm going out on a limb here and guessing you don't either. right?

Well, one thing is for sure -- this is a perfect opportunity for people to feel good about how enlightened they are. See mom, they killed us in the name of Islam and we're going to let someone plant a great, big, fat symbol of Islam right where the blood and guts and brain matter was actually spilled. Aint we grand. For my part, my cheek only turns so far, after which time my neck breaks.
