During my reading I had a few different visualizations - all were good. When Zhu stirs and Alistair tenses, it felt as though that scene came straight out of a movie. At most other times, it was very easy to visualize things as though they were rendered Final Fantasy or CLAMP style (idk why my brain did the former, but yeah) OK THE POINT IS the writing flows well enough that everything is playing out like a film, which I always, always consider a good thing.
It also means that I wasn't bored. AND that you've made everything (the setting, and the characters, especially) interesting enough so far that I would willingly go on if this were a book I'd picked up in the library. So now your goal is to make this library book such a good one that I will not only finish reading it, but spend money on the hardcover edition so that I can keep it till I die (Although as you know, I am already biased toward post-apocalyptic settings and generous gay subtext ( ... )

I agree that the visuals are stunning and very cinematic. I'm biased towards Zhu, because hhng how you painted those eyes.
The tension is excellently handled. Even knowing that Alistair wouldn't kill him doesn't lessen the impact.
I liked the hopeful note in the last part.
This is a very, very promising verse. Much better than some fantasy novels I'd been picking up to read and I say that as someone whose favourite genre is fantasy.
