The Satanic Verses

Jan 20, 2008 12:43

My parents gave me a copy of The Satanic Verses for Christmas and, truth be told, I'm having a little difficulty getting into it. In the meantime, I've been reading about the controversy it caused when Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa ordering Rushdie's death over it. It all seems a little medieval to me, not to mention completely over-the-top and ( Read more... )

I'm glad that there are such things as fatwas. Obvious, non-sneaky method of letting the other side know that they're going to be killed. It beats being nabbed in the middle of the night and shipped off to Gitmo. And at least in countries like Iran they don't even pretend they have something called freedom of expression.

That is true. Nonetheless, it's the fact that they feel like they have the right to impose their lack of freedom of expression on the rest of the world that bothers me.

The Iranian people don't pretend they have any freedom of expression. Unless you're Shadi Ghadirian and everyone loves you because because you put colourful chadors around kettles and ironing boards. But the Iranian government like pretending they give people the freedom to say and do what they wish...not surprisingly, it's a lie. They block massive amounts of websites, books and other media from Iran although there are a few smart-arses that can override that by hacking [even google was blocked for a few hours once!]...they even 'censor' out parts of women that are considered 'haram' [by Iranian governmental standards mind you, not by Qu'ranic standards] on pictures on CDs and stuff imported from overseas. They've now banned people from wearing boots over pants. And yet Ahmadinejad still insists that they have valid reasons for all their decisions, and when he knows he's going to get shit for something, he backs away and hides himself. Like that time he refused to speak at Tehran university because he didn't think it was 'appropriate ( ... )

teehee funnily enough I bought a copy of the Satanic Bible the other day....I now feel like a very very stereotypical "goth" *sigh*

I'm quite certain it's namely due to the fact that this religion has the word Satan in it that it becomes Controversial. That just irritates me to all hell...no silly pun intended.

I find it very sad how people just can't deal with something that goes against their stream so much so that they decide to try to kill someone.

ignore my bad english....It's late

I actually heard that the main reason they got upset was because the words they used when they translated it into Arabic made it sound like it was the 'satanic Qu'ran', when in fact it has almost nothing to do with the Qu'ran. So you may be right there.

Khomeini cheeseburgers do you want? KHOMEINI?!

Bad...

I'm too tired to write anything remotely intelligent, or anything for that matter...even about my great pal Ayatollah...which means I'm pretty fucking tired!

Although, when you consider the effect that Khomeini's influence still has on Iran, it's not very surprising that he issued a fatwa...and that they still won't remove it. Iran's judicial system is backwards...about a week ago in Tehran, a couple of guys' right hands and left legs were amputated because they decided block streets for some reason and shoot at stuff...no-one died...now the government is conviced they are a terrorist group funded by Al-Qaeda. WHICH MEANS APUTATEZ TIMEZ LOl!1ONE

But...butbut...I still love Iran. I STILL LOVE YOU, IRAN. IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS I WILL BEGIN TO LEARN YOUR LANGUAGE AND ATTEMPT TO SPEAK IT VERY POORLY.

I would like 3.141529... cheeseburgers, thankyou.

It is good to hear from someone who knows rather more than me about Iran. Are you really learning Persian? Or is this Arabic of which you speak? Because I can't wait to start attempting to speak Arabic very poorly with you.

I love Iran. And I love Iranian politics. And I love Iranian relations with Afghanistan. And I love Afghanistan. And I love Afghan politics. And I love Afghan relations with Pakistan. And I love Pakistan. And I love Pakistani politics. I think you get the picture. Man, I really love Iran. Like...obsessively.

And yes, I will be learning Persian! Farsi, not Dari. Farsi pwnz. [Thanks to my grandpa who will be teaching me...in...10 days!] I will hopefully also be learning Arabic if uni decides that my enrolment into that subject can go through. I really hope it does...regardless of that I'll be doing Swedish anyway because SWEDISH PWNZ OVER EVERYTHING. Maybe even music. Maybe not. Who knows.

AND I CAN'T WAIT TO START SPEAKING ARABIC VERY POORLY WITH YOU TOO!! MAYBE WE CAN COMBINE PERSIAN AND ARABIC TO CREATE...PARABIC? I CAN'T WAIT TO START SPEAKING PARABIC VERY POORLY WITH YOU!
