An Anniversary, But Not What You Think

Aug 17, 2014 17:37

Twenty-four years ago this weekend, my husband and I moved from NYC to the mountains of rural northern New Hampshire. The week before that we were married by a judge at City Hall with two of his staff as our witnesses. We didn't have a reception; we went shopping to buy things for our house in New Hampshire instead. The move was our honeymoon. ( Read more... )

You're welcome. We're very happy here, but I'll admit there was a bit of culture shock coming from NYC. However, I had grown up on a large (400 acres) farm in Ohio so I adjusted pretty quickly.

Thanks for the anniversary wish. :>)

Happy Anniversary!

What a great story/backstory. How wonderful of you to repair their headstones. Also, I had no idea you used to live in NYC!

Really? You didn't know I'd lived in NYC? I went to NYC immediately after college graduation and worked there for 30 years at RCA Records then the Recorded Music Division of Reader's Digest. They were wonderful years.

You should write a post or two about all the wonderful musicians you met through your job. Your friends would love it.

Hugs,

Rach

Hmm, what an interesting thought. I was at RCA for 20 years and met nearly everyone who recorded for the label back then. I was in the Marketing & Promotion Department and ALL the recording artists came through our department if they wanted to get their records sold. ;>)

I always love old things that have a story. They just seem to have more life than new things, as if they have grown through experience, have SEEN more, learned more. They are simply more interesting. I'm glad your house has a history you can enjoy.

Hugs,

Rach

Thanks Rach. I feel the same.

I just discovered something horrifying: I didn't do a birthday post for you!!! I was reading my friends page and saw people wishing you a Happy Birthday and just went, D'oh! I've been so hung up worrying about getting that package to you that it totally slipped my mind. But...at least you know I didn't truly forget the date. I hope it comes tomorrow as promised by UPS.

Happy anniversary! Your place is so lovely, both the grounds and the house, and it is great that you were able to learn so much of the history of the house and the family. And how wonderful to know the descendants!

Some very thorough genealogy has been done for both sides of my family and the same for my husband. So I decided to research the people who built this house, their descendants and others who have lived here. It's been fascinating.

You icon is very pretty.

Thank you. I got the idea for this entry because of Outlander. The Maguires were Scottish and Englsh and hubby and I are Scottish (3/4) and English.

Have you seen episode two yet? I feel as though I'm just treading water until they get married.

Good point about the Scottish/English connection. ;-)

Yes, I have seen the second episode. From what I've read, the 6th episode with Claire and BJR is really good. That's before the wedding (in the book and presumably the show too), so maybe you won't feel so much like it's treading water by that point. I assume the wedding is in the first 8 episodes that come in this batch and that we don't have to wait until the 2015 shows to see that.

Oh, I didn't mean "treading water" in a bad way. I'm loving the series...just anxious to see the wedding. It is episode 7 in the first 8. And yes, I've heard good things about episode 6 as well. It's the events in that episode that plant the idea of marriage in the minds of Colum and Dougal so it makes sense that the 7th episode would be the wedding.

Sam is perfection itself as Jamie. Love Cait now that I've accepted the blue eyes and height difference. And Tobias is awesomely menacing. Have only had a glimpse of Jenny, but she has neither blue eyes nor curly hair. And Old Alec is missing an eye patch, if I remember the book correctly.

In the book, didn't Mrs. Fitz and Claire apply leeches to Jamie's bruised, swollen eye after his beating by Angus? They didn't include that and I know it was filmed because Sam and Cait both talked about how funny it was filming that scene. Or maybe it's another scene. I'd love to see it.
