Chapter 03

“No.”

“What do you mean ‘no’?”

Myungsoo leans down the table to empathize each and every word that comes out of his mouth; “Not for all the money in the world.”

“Why the hell not?”

“You’re ugly.”

Sungyeol gasps. He had always considered himself visually appealing. Once he reached puberty, and got his braces off, girls started noticing how funny and cute he is (and Sungyeol started noticing how shallow and superficial they are).

“I wouldn’t want to be seen with you. Bad for my reputation and all. I mean, that haircut, really? And what’s with those huge cheeks? Were you fat as a kid or something?” He continues, then stops, pursing his lips to a thin line, before fishing his phone from his pocket. He takes a picture of Sungyeol with the camera on his phone. “You should see the expression on your face. Oh, this is precious.”

“You’re a real asshole, you know that?”

Before Myungsoo could reply to that someone slaps him up the head. He looks up to his blonde friend and rubs the sore spot on his head, frowning childishly at him.

“We talked about this didn’t we? What did I tell you to say; ‘I’m not in the mood for a fight, please leave. Thank you.’ Is that so hard to be polite? Is it? Do you need to get into more trouble?”

Myungsoo rolls his eyes.

“I’m sorry for whatever he said. He’s really moody. He doesn’t want to cause any troubles, really. You’re welcomed to sit with us, right, Myungsoo?”

Myungsoo prefers to look at the window. The guy pinches him.

“It’s okay,” Sungyeol takes his lunchbox. “I was just about to leave.”

“Do you think I’m ugly?”

It’s the middle of history class, and Hoya glances at the teacher before replying; “Not particularly. Just a little insane.”

Sungyeol nods, and sighs.

Woohyun left him because he was ugly. Kim Sunggyu the hamster must be more handsome than him.

Oh, Woohyun with his wicked smile and lame (funny) jokes and bad pick-up lines probably thinks that Sungyeol is ugly. It all makes sense now. Kim Sunggyu the hamster with his nonexistent eyes and weird mouth-hanging-opened smile looks better than Sungyeol.

Sighing again, Sungyeol puts his head on the desk, and hides the world with the help of his longer arms. It’s so comfortable in his darkness. There is no need to be ashamed for the title ‘Uglier than Kim Sunggyu the Hamster’ in the darkness.

“Are you okay?” Hoya asks after a long while. “It’s the last period, hang in there.”

Hoya’s so nice.

He even offers to walk him home once the lesson is over. Why can’t Hoya be his pretend-boyfriend?

They chatter about the warm weather, and then say goodbyes, because Hoya lives in the other direction.

Before Sungyeol even manages to get outside, some unknown number calls him.

“Hello?”

There’s silence on the line.

“Hello~o?”

They hang up on him. What the hell.

He stares at his phone.

It’s awfully quiet in the hallway. There’s also nobody here besides him. Kind of like the start of horror movie.

“Boo.”

Sungyeol jumps in fright and hits the lockers.

Myungsoo chuckles and takes out his phone. He’s about to snap another shot of him, when Sungyeol slaps his hand.

“What the hell is wrong with you?!” His voice echoes in the lonely hall. “Pig,” he wipes his legs from invisible dust, as if the lockers were dirty.

He’s about to go home, but Myungsoo blocks his way.

“Alright,” he says.

“Alright what?”

“I really need that money.”

Sungyeol straightens a little. “Okay.”

“Okay.” Myungsoo repeats after him.

This is a bit awkward. He was so wrapped up in Myungsoo agreeing to the whole deal that he hasn’t really thought it through to this part. He clears his throat.

“When do I get my money?”

Figures he’ll want to know that.

Sungyeol rubs his head. He hasn’t thought about that too. “Well… basically, I thought of something like this: 1,000 won for a hug. 5,000 won for a kiss -”

“No, that’s not going to work.”

He frowns. “Why not?”

“Firstly, 5,000 for a kiss? Make it at least twenty-“

“The hell-I’m not going to pay that much for an asshole to kiss me-“

“Fine, then.” Myungsoo suddenly pulls him by the collar and their lips meet in a clumsy collision.

It takes him five good seconds to understand that the bastard is actually kissing him. He pushes him away roughly and wipes his lips with his sleeve. “What the hell?!” He glares at him, outraged.

Myungsoo extends his flat palm to him.

Sungyeol stares at it.

“Well, pay up. 5,000 won.”

“Are you serious? I don’t have any money on me; I spent it on lunch!”

Now he looks smug. “See? The perfect explanation to why this system wouldn’t work. How about this? I name a price and you give me half now, half when I’m done.”

It’s actually really logical when he thinks of it.

He nods, wiping his mouth one last time.

“6 million won.” Myungsoo offers. “In Cash.” He adds.

“What? Do I look made of gold? 1 million - and you’re not even worth that.”

“Alright, 4 million, and that’s final.”

Sungyeol makes a face. “1.5 million.”

Myungsoo turns around, and starts walking.

4 million won… that’s like… 3 and a half thousand dollar! He doesn’t have that kind of money! He barely has 3 million - and that’s adding up all his allowance which he definitely didn’t plan on giving out to some weirdo that drinks vitamin water with a straw.

He was saving for a trip to Europe when he graduates. He wanted to go to Europe, to see Paris and Madrid and Rome and London. With Woohyun. They even planned it; where they’ll stay and what they’ll see.

As he see’s Myungsoo’s retreating back, he understands that Woohyun isn’t going to Paris or Madrid, anymore. And if he does, it’s definitely not with Sungyeol.

“3 million won.” It echoes in the hallway, and makes Myungsoo stop on his tracks. “That’s all my money. 3 million. 1.5 now, 1.5 later.”

They stroll down to the ATM in silence.

Sungyeol hates himself for spending so much money on such a dick like Myungsoo. Nobody ever said Woohyun will get jealous. But he might. And it will definitely show him that he moved on.

Good enough. He’ll get to rub it in Woohyun’s face that he thinks of their relationship like it was experimenting as well.

It kind of hurts to think about it. He glances at Myungsoo. Maybe this is a bit rushed.

“So,” Myungsoo starts a conversation. “You like me.”

“Ew, god, no.”

Myungsoo looks surprised as if this is the first time someone says it to his face. And it probably is, considering how good he looks. “Why would you want me to be your boyfriend, otherwise?”

It’s an unavoidable topic, and Myungsoo probably should know.

“To piss off my ex.”

That satisfies his needs. “Fair enough. Bad break-up?”

“Something like that,” Sungyeol doesn’t want to talk about it, especially not with a complete stranger. “Why do you need the money?” he changes the subject.

Myungsoo shrugs as they arrive at the ATM.

“Oh, come on, I told you why I’m doing this, let’s hear your side.”

“My friend and I are in trouble.”

“The cute guy with the blonde hair, right?”

“Yeah. Lee Sungjong.”

Sungyeol nods. “How deep in trouble are you?”

Myungsoo looks at his sneakers. “Pretty deep.” Although he tries to act stoic, his voice gives him out.

“Did you kill someone?”

Myungsoo looks up to him and snorts, before licking his lips in amusement. Sungyeol finds his own joke a little funny; “What? I want to know if I’m giving my money to a murder.”

“Didn’t kill anyone,” He assures him, and Sungyeol finally presses the accept button on the ATM, then Myungsoo remembers to add; “Yet.”

“What do you mean yet?”

“Well, you’re kind of annoying. Who knows when I’ll snap?”

He glares at him, and then looks back at the money. His poor bank account.

“You better be one heck of a boyfriend, or else you won’t see the other half.”

“Oh, don’t worry,” There’s definitely something evil about Kim Myungsoo. “I will.”

Myungsoo slurps from his vitamin water.

Hoya holds onto his sandwich.

Sungjong is sucking a lollipop noisily.

Sungyeol feels like it cannot get more awkward than this.

It was a bad idea to call Myungsoo to sit with them, but he was actually hoping that Woohyun will come to the cafeteria today.

Usually they would sit together, but nowadays, Woohyun doesn’t even show up. Probably off making out with Kim Sunggyu the Hamster.

Hoya looks between them, not sure if he should continue to eat his sandwich. “So… nice to see you making new friends.” He manages. “I actually thought you … hated each other… because of that incident in the library.”

“We did, but it’s all over now, right, honey?”

Myungsoo flashes him with this creepy fake smile. Unintentionally, the smile gives Sungyeol the creeps, and he shudders in disgust and hits him as hard as he can under the table.

This was a bad idea. It might be not too late to get his money back.

“It’s kind of weird, isn’t it?” Sungjong leans to Hoya. “I was actually surprised when he called us over. And even more surprised that Myungsoo agreed.”

Hoya nods.

“Me and Myungsoo settled the score and decided to be on even ground.” Sungyeol is proud that he actually said that, because he was thinking of a logical explanation to Hoya all night, and this is the final version of the long inner debate.

“Yeah, we definitely settled the score, alright.” Myungsoo hints and puts a hand on him.

Sungyeol jerks his hand off and leans to his ear to whispers; “Touch me again and I’ll put this chopstick through your brains.”

He turns around and smiles to Hoya, before making it seem like he was ruffling Myungsoo’s hair.

Myungsoo makes a face and slurps from his water again.

“Weird.” Lee Sungjong says, lollipop out of his mouth.

“Uh-huh.” Hoya agrees.

They’re staring at them with identical looks of fascination, as if they’re raccoons behind bars at the zoo, before turning to each other.

“I’m Lee Howon, by the way. But everybody call me Hoya.”

“Lee Sungjong.”

They shake friendly hands.

“Stop making such a fuss,”

“I’m not making a fuss! Hoya probably thinks I’ve completely lost my mind! Ugh! What the hell was that with Honey”-he mimics Myungsoo’s voice- “And that creepy hinting? How can you even explain such a thing to your best friend, huh?! Thank god your friend was there! He totally saved the day.”

“I assumed he was your ex, okay?”

They’re in the bathroom, and Sungyeol feels like puking either because of the smell, either because he imagines what Hoya is thinking of him right now.

“How could I know he was your best friend? You never told me a thing. Besides, I thought you’re gay. Since you picked me. And not some pretty girl.”

Sungyeol calms down a little. Myungsoo’s right - he doesn’t know a thing about him… or his ex.

“My ex is Nam Woohyun. He has reddish short hair. Really hard to miss, since he never stops talking. Particularly about himself.”

Myungsoo nods. “Just so you know, you have gay written all over you-“

“Looks whose talking, the guy who chose to come to school with a fedora.”

“Not everybody wants to look like tasteless giants.”

“I’m going to punch you, I swear I will-“

“You guys okay? You’re taking an awful a lot of time…” Sungjong sticks his head through the door. “Hoya-Hyung already left for class,” He informs naturally, as if Hoya had immediately became his close friend.

Sungyeol glares at Myungsoo one last time, before running to catch up with his friend.

“Hi,” Woohyun came all the way to his locker, although his locker is in a different floor, and recess should be over any moment.

Sungyeol braces himself, reminds himself that he has a new (fake) boyfriend and that he shouldn’t be bothered.

“Hi,” he says back while taking his books out. He avoids eye contact. Last thing he needs is to blurt things out. Tact is the keyword here.

“How are you?”

“Fine,” it’s the truth anyway. It’s not like he’s losing his mind and doing some satanic rituals to bring Woohyun back to him. (Unless you include Myungsoo of demonic heritage).

Did Hoya actually managed somehow to spread the word of creepy Myungsoo putting his hands on him all lunch long? Is that why he’s here?

Oh god, he’s going to get to rub it in his face now. And he’s going to enjoy every second of it.

“Good,” Woohyun takes a sharp intake of air.

Sungyeol closes his locker.

“I know you’re still mad, ‘Yeol-“

“Don’t call me that.” It comes out naturally, before he can even bite himself back.

Woohyun manages to look apologetic suddenly, and Sungyeol hates him for it. “We’ve always been friends, Sungyeol. Just because we got a little carried away-“

“Yeah, alright, I get it. We were experimenting. I completely understand.” He must sound bitter, because Woohyun frowns.

“Aren’t you taking this a little too far? You’re just mad because you think I left you for Sunggyu!”

“Sorry, I’m getting confused. So you did leave me? Because I thought we weren’t in a relationship in the first place.”

“You know what I mean, Sungyeol! You’re acting like such a baby!” Sungyeol wants to reply, but before he can Woohyun cuts him off rudely; “You knew it wasn’t serious!”

He crosses his hands on his chest taps his leg annoyingly on the floor, as if waiting for Woohyun to leave. The other clicks his tongue; “Did you even cry?”

The question seems irrelevant. “What?”

“Did you cry over me?”

No, he didn’t cry. He’s not some hormonal teenage girl that wets her pants while thinking of Woohyun.

“And don’t give me that bullshit that I’m not worth your tears or that men don’t cry.”

Sungyeol thinks those reasons actually apply to why he didn’t cry over Woohyun.

“It doesn’t matter.” He says importantly. “I have a new boyfriend, so you don’t matter.” It’s his trump card.

Woohyun looks speechless. Sungyeol makes his exit.

He’s in a good mood next morning, when Hoya bumps his shoulder into his.

Sungyeol gives him a grin.

“I see you finally made up with Woohyun. Good.” Sungyeol wants to say that it’s quite the contrary, but Hoya continues; “I was thinking you might take all this boyfriend issue too hard.”

He stops on his tracks. “What boyfriend?”

“Woohyun’s boyfriend…?” Hoya opens his locker; he says it as if it’s obvious. “I thought you’re going to flip out on me again-“ It suddenly dawns to Hoya. “-Oh, man. He didn’t tell you, did he?”

“No. I knew.” Sungyeol says calmly.

Woohyun and Sungyeol never made it public. Even Hoya didn’t know. They always snuck around behind everybody’s backs. Always behind closed doors. The two of them never actually talked about it, but Sungyeol thought it was pretty obvious. To keep it a dirty little secret between them.

But it’s different with Sunggyu, apparently.

So much for his good mood.

Hoya looks relieved. “Thank god. Because they’ve been dating for a month now, and I didn’t know if you knew or not, and you know I’m really bad at keeping secrets.”

A MONTH?

A MONTH?!

They broke up barely a week ago! That back-stabbing, cheating man-whore that two-timed him! Sure, they didn’t do much making-out lately, but they had finals on their nose… A MONTH?!

His expression probably gives him away.

“He didn’t tell you.” Hoya sighs. “But it’s not like it was serious between them! Woohyun said they only decided to take it to the next level just this week. So maybe he was waiting for the right moment to tell you.”

Sungyeol feels like he’s going to explode.
