D glanced at Leon over the rim of his tea cup, his strange, mismatched eyes dark with worry. The more or less companionable silence that often stretched out between them as they sipped their afternoon tea seemed somehow heavy today. Leon’s eyes, usually so blue, so alert, were clouded with fatigue as he stared mutely into the depths of his cup.

“Detective,” D ventured quietly, setting his cup down on the table, “Are you alright?”

Leon shook his head as if to clear his mind and raised his bleary eyes toward him. His expression indicated mild puzzlement. “Y-yeah, I’m fine,” He mumbled. “Why?

“You seem tired, that’s all.”

A wan smile twisted Leon’s lips. “Work has been hell lately… or at least a lot more hellish than normal.” He amended wryly. “Some fucking pervert is out there chopping up women for shits and giggles. It’s my case, you know, my responsibility. So I’ve been burning the candle on both ends for the last two weeks.”

“I see,” D murmured sympathetically

“But we’re going to catch this son of a bitch.” Leon declared with a tired air of confidence. “After all, there’s no rest for the wicked.”

“So it would seem.”
