Why is everyone so against trading Melky? I like him and he is a great defensive player but the Yankees have Bronson Sardhina, Brett Gardner, Austin Jackson, and Jose Tabata in the minors. If a package that includes Melky nets the Yankees someone like Miguel Cabrera or Johan Santana then sign me up. 

I guess Buster Olney was on ESPN saying that the Yankees will pursue Lowell. Buster claims they're willing to pony up a 3-4yr deal and that Lowell is still friends with Jeter and Posada from his days in the Yankees farm system.

As the Yankees were making official the hiring of Joe Girardi as the 32nd manager in team history, star reliever Mariano Rivera was at the team's Tampa, Fla., headquarters with his agents -- a likely precursor to a contract extension. According to the New York Post, the Yankees decided at their first offseason baseball operations meeting that they will pick up the $16 million contract option on Bobby Abreu. Keeping Abreu around for the 2008 season means the Shelly Duncan will rotate between right field, first base and DH once again.
