Okay, all that stuff you said about Daniel/Betty - you have seriously jumped into my head as well. That's EXACTLY how I feel! I will just wither to nothingness if the series ends with them just as friends. But the last ep definitely gave us something to hope for!! I cannot stop rewatching that scene, lol.
I'm greatly heartened to see that the critics and the fandom are responding so warmly to him. Smith walked into an unenviable position, fandom-wise, but already has conquered the skeptics.
God, DB kills me. First Angel and now Booth? I mean, he plays that situation so well. The look on his face is just devastating. And I'm with you, that episode could have gone wrong in so many ways, but they just did it perfectly. I keep asking myself what if The X-Files hadn't dicked around for so many years and done something similar? Would I have kept watching, even through the trying Reyes years? I'm thinking yes, if my reaction to this episode was any indication.
Even back before DB learned to act, he always had two things he could do really, really well: (1) Suffer. Before he could give you a convincing line read, DB could give you a reaction shot that actually made you believe he'd been spat out of hell after centuries of unimaginable torment; and (2) Look at a woman like he loves her so much it hurts, and he wouldn't have it any other way.
This scene called heavily on both of his strongest skills, and oh, man.
I love the total understanding in the scene. There's more love in this scene of her choosing not to have a relationship with him than there is in most hooking-up scenes.
