The work is hard, but it is honest work. Mining is mining. They can’t really push him any harder than he would push himself. The cold….. he doesn’t feel the cold. The pain burns in him hot enough to stave of the iciest Rura Penthe night ( ... )

Oooh, I like this. Dark and creepy. And I love the mention of Rura Penthe.

Thanks! I'm not seeing enough love for Angsty Romulans out there - I thought I would just as well take things in to my own hands :x

irony = forgetting to post from your writing account in the first place, and then not realizing you *had* when you respond to a comment. >_

"Kirk wants to retake the Kobayashi Maru," she says.

Spock's lying beside her, toying with strands of her hair, and he doesn't even look up from his fingers when he replies, "He won't pass it."

"What makes you so certain?" she teases, because even lying naked among rumpled sheets he manages to look completely serious, and she wants to make him smile. This time he raises his gaze to her face.

"I programmed the test," he replies. Any other man would sound insufferably proud, but Spock makes it a statement of fact. "Trust me, Nyota, the Kobayashi Maru is unbeatable and meant to be so."

"So you're saying no one can beat it."

"I believe that was the meaning my words conveyed."

"You couldn't beat it?" she asks.

"As I currently administer the test, that is hardly a productive line of questioning," he says, raising an eyebrow at her.

"Then you think I couldn't beat it ( ... )

Aw, I like! Good thing for Spock that Uhura doesn't believe in the no-win scenario either.

:) Glad you like! (Though, gah, I just realized I have Spock raising an eyebrow twice in the course of two paragraphs. Writing on the fly = anatomical redundancy for me it would seem!)

"You're where?" Joanna's eyes had grown enormous.

Leonard leaned closer to the terminal to whisper almost conspiratorially "In space."

"Where in space?"

"Really far away."

"How far away?"

"You know how long it takes to get to Atlanta in the flyer from your Neela's house in Adelaide?"

She nodded solemnly, dark curls bobbing. It scared him how quick she was growing. She was five now--but before he knew it, she'd be twenty five and he'd be a creaky old bastard, demanding grandchildren. He wasn't sure he was ready for any of that yet.

"It's gonna take us four whole days to get where we're going. And that's with us going so fast, you wouldn't even be able to see us."

"Wow."

"Yep."

"I don't want you to be far away, daddy."

McCoy swallowed past the sudden lump in his throat. "I know, baby."

He may joke about his ex getting the planet in the divorce, but I bet the real reason he's going into space is because she got Joanna.

I can perfectly imagine it too.

Thanks! I'm interested in seeing how these two relate in the reboot universe.

I think there's definitely a sense in the reboot that Kirk is less a leader apart and more "first among equals." And I think it's enormously telling that they showed Sulu rescuing Kirk during their first meeting.

I love this so much. Swoosh keeps breaking me. but I just love that Jim's finally found a lady worth becoming a grown-up for. And remebering how Bones told Data if he treats her like a lady, she'll always bring him home.
