Both of my cats have herpes. The day after we picked Dante up from the animal shelter, he started showing symptoms of a very severe cold. We soon learned that this was no ordinary cold--he was sick for two months before he started to get better. As much as we tried to isolate him from Dinah, it's super contagious and she got it. (She was vaccinated for it, but the vaccines are not that effective.) I was horrified to have two cats with goopy eyes (I found that regular OTC eye drops from Petco helped relieve some of the eye discomfort) and congestion and sneezing, but with medicine, they both eventually got better and have not had any outbreaks since. Dante, though, still has a big of congestion; he often wheezes slightly when he breathes. I suspect he'll always have that, because his cold was so severe.
Anyway, it really isn't a big deal. Most cats have the virus; it's just dormant most of the time. But poor kitty. I hope he gets well soon.
yeah, olivia has not gotten it and the vet said that since she was vaccinated and was an adult when frank came home, she will probably not get it.
as far as poor frank and the outbreaks, he was really bad when he first came home--he was sneezing blood. but now he just leaks and sneezes HUGE snot balls and snores. this is his 3 round of antibiotics since we got him in september, and she said they might make some of the swelling in his eye go down and cause some sort of chain reaction that might result in some congestion going away.
his symptoms may also lessen as he gets older, but since he's had it pretty solidly for 5 months, it might not.
as long as he's not in pain, i don't mind having a goopy, wheezing cat. he suits us :)

I added you...we used to be lj-friends way back when, but somehow now we're not. And I am seeking out interesting journals to read, and interesting people to read mine...so there you have it!
