i always knew that one of us would end up with herpes.
fortunately, i suppose, it's frank the cat.
turns out, his constant leaky eye, congestion, and sneeze attacks are most likely a result of cat herpes. most cats get vaccinated for this, as did frank, but he had it before the vaccine. (for those of you who don't keep up with the medical problems of my cats, frank was sick when we took him home from the shelter and ended up having to go back for a week of isolation and antibiotics. they thought it was just a persistent cold.)
the pamphlet the vet gave us said that feral kittens, "waifs of the street", outdoor kittens, and shelter kittens are all at high risk for herpes. frank was like, all of those things. he was found at 3 months old wandering the streets of renton.
so, herpes. he's on an antibiotic right now because the vet thinks he also has a secondary bacterial infection. the herpes, as with people, is an incurable virus. he'll probably be okay though. there are anti-virals we can try if he gets bad. the vet said he's pretty mild right now. and he has gained 3 lbs since the last time he was at the vet in october, so he is not suffering the loss of appetite that is a bad sign.
so yeah, frank has herpes, thus sealing his fate as the King of the Garbage Cats!!!!
