that policy has also been in place since before the rating system changed and made it less advantageous to play up. what's the point of it these days? I'm not sure.
The same thing happened to me for Can-Am qualification; I ended up losing two points on my peak, which actually ended up mattering, because before I was 1 point ahead of Sykes, and after, I was one point below. And that ended up mattering, because with less of a lock, I was less inclined to come out of my hiatus and begin studying, and by the time enough people had passed such that I had a spot, I had decided that there wasn't enough time to get back into fighting form.
So you might say that the entire reason I'm not in scrabble right now was because of this horrible rule. (It would be ridiculous hyperbole and wrong, but you could say it!) :)
I think rating should be purchasable and sellable. If it didn't reflect one's true abilities, it would eventually even out anyway! Why can't we have a rating market? it would probably generate money for NASPA... I mean people pay money for FarmVille extras and crap like that don't they?
