I'm unsure whether this is just a clever ploy to garner sympathy for the taxi companies, or a legitimate effort to grow food. Perhaps a bit of each. It reminds me uncomfortably of the Roman Forum being used for pig farming, when its original purpose had passed from the scene.

I think every high school back then had a guy with a hearse. Ours was a jet black '59 Caddy, which if you recall had the maximum jet-wing tail fins. As a kid whose dad made caskets, I think you can imagine how much I coveted those wheels.

And was 'Party Hearse' perhaps a take on 'Patty Hearst'?

I *think* this was a Cadillac, although not that old. It definitely had the Landau chromework on the back.

I don 't know, but I doubt if Patty Hearst had anything to do with it. For one thing, it was always "The Party Hearse", with the definite article. Secondly, 'party' was just a hugely popular word at the time, in my school. It covered smoking dope, drinking beer, and drinking whiskey, roughly. And for whiskey, of course, there were always two cliques - the Crown Royal guys, and the Jack Daniels (aka JD) guys. :)
