Time Marches On

39 days until the State Fair! 32 days until the Olympics! I find myself with a new-found appreciation for the ordinary observances of the year, having been deprived of them for only one time. How must prisoners feel, one wonders, freed from their durance, and allowed once again to wander among their fellow men?

Will be happy for the Olympics! The Tokyo Games of 1964 were the first ones I really remember, so it will be nice to've lived long enough to see them return full circle.

I, too, would like to see Summer and Winter Games synced again. I'm ± uninterested in the Winter ones by themselves, but there's something about a double billing every 4 years that enhances the overall Olympics experience for me. Alas, I doubt those days will ever return.

I recall seeing bits and pieces as far back as Mexico City, and of course there was that disaster in Munich, but the first one I really paid attention to was Innsbrück, in 1976. I saw, more or less by chance, Franz Klammer turn in that maniacal performance, and I was pretty much hooked. My friend Mike and I were obsessed wih Franz Klammer for several years afterward. FWIW, I kept watching downhill skiing on Wide World of Sports for the next three or four years, and he never again managed anything remotely similar. Apparently for just that single, desperate, two minute span, the God of Skiing possessed him, and he was unstoppable. The local pizza parlour had one of those loop projectors, that played silent movies about 15 minutes or so long, and the '76 Winter Games was a favourite there (along with a variety of Laurel and Hardy shorts
