39 days until the State Fair! 32 days until the Olympics! I find myself with a new-found appreciation for the ordinary observances of the year, having been deprived of them for only one time. How must prisoners feel, one wonders, freed from their durance, and allowed once again to wander among their fellow men?
On the good side this year, they're keeping the fair in operation for three weeks, July 30th to August 22nd. Bizarrely, perhaps unprecedentedly, they're closing on Mondays and Tuesdays. I have to think that vendors, etc, will be open, as the exhibitors have to eat. It might be worth taking a trip down on one of the offdays to see what it's like.
On the one wing, I like having four weekends of Fair instead of three. On the other, part of what I enjoy is that weird "test to destruction" feeling one gets in an ordinary year. By the third weekend, everything is falling apart, the vegetables are wilted and dried up, everyone is exhausted, but still maniacally intent on having fun. We'll see how this works. On the whole, I suppose it will be a good thing.
The Fair Theme should be (but isn't) "Indiana - We're Hard to Kill".

I was worried for a bit that the anti-Olympics faction might succeed in cancelling them, but I honestly think it's gone past the point where you could cancel without causing (very expensive) chaos. I'd feel more assured if foreign tourists were allowed, but even so, many, many travel plans, hotel reservations, etc, have been made, plus athletes are beginning to arrive, etc.
All that being said, I still think it would have been best to put it off for one more year, and get the Winter and Summer Games back on the same cycle. I'm prolly being paranoid, but I can't help but wonder if there's some idea of getting the Tokyo games run before the Peking ones, so a boycott or some other jackassery can be called on Peking. One hopes a lesson would have been learned in 1980, but that's prolly a bit much to expect from our lot.
