The initial meet.
I meet you. I probably don't talk. I stand around you, laugh at your jokes, listen to your stories. But I don't contribute to the conversation at all. I just kinda stand in my spot and do my thing.

The goodbye.

this sounds a lot like me :P
I've gotten a lot better than I used to be, but I'm still really really shy around people I don't know well. But if I'm around any people who I know pretty well, I'll tend to be more outgoing. It just takes a lot of time for me to be completely comfortable around someone.
