It's hard to remain as happy as I was 12 hours ago. I'll play Devil's Advocate here (I have no problem with gay rights): how American is putting a divisive issue up to popular vote and allowing the people to decide for themselves how they want to be governed?

Prop 8 passed because a majority of California decided that they didn't want gay marriage in their state. They put it up to a vote, and the voters decided. If that's not American, then I don't know what is.

I actually kind of agree with Matt. You can't really support democracy and then be upset when the results aren't what you wanted. I'm shocked that this happened and incredibly disappointed, but most people have said gay rights should be a state issue and I agree. Sad that California did what it did (and kind of surprising) but that's democracy. Some states are going to be trailing behind others in terms of recognizing these rites.

It's not that I'm not supporting the whole democratic part of it. While I don't believe that a decision this large should be left up to the states (I have a feeling that having all these states with different definitions of marriage is just going to end up snowballing in the same way that slavery did), it has been, and the people have spoken, and good for them for getting what they want. The point of that comment is not about democracy, it's about the deeper, intangible ideals that America was founded on ( ... )

First of all, I completely agree with you on Prop 8. Check out George Carlin's "Human Rights" (youtube!) When do humans have the ability to control others rights? Its so sad.

And....... WOO OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No scary people in the White House- sweet!

Also, Sign Language is an awesome class. I took it last year, you'll have fun! And then we can communicate with our hands!! :0)
