csifreak90 Anna jotted her friend’s address down on the palm of Lindsay’s hand.
The entire walk back to the coffee shop where she had planned to meet her mother, Lindsay held her hand flat, fanning it so she wouldn’t sweat. If she lost the address, she had no idea what she’d do.
Her mother was waiting in a car just up the street. She smiled, happy to see that she was on time for once. She wasn’t so happy when she spied a head of spiky hair in the backseat.
“Hey babe,” her boyfriend said, jumping from the front seat. He kissed her on the cheek and offered her the seat as he climbed into the back.
“Hiya honey,” Dina said, shifting the car into drive. “What’s that on your hand?”
The boy in the backseat stuck his head between the two front seats nosily.
“Oh, just an address. I’m going to see some friends later.”
Dina grinned. Lindsay had lost many of her friends since her career took off and she hadn’t made many new ones. Her mother beamed with happiness. “That’s great, dear. Are you going to take Kyle with you?”
Lindsay shrugged awkwardly. “I think it’s just a girl’s night, actually. Sorry.” Kyle slumped in the backseat, crossing his arms and pouting. He was 17 but acted more like a toddler sometimes.
Anna had told her they’d be watching the movie around 8 if she wanted to arrive around then. All afternoon, Lindsay watched the clock. It seemed like time sped up and then slowed down, just to confuse her.
She didn’t want to arrive right on time; it would seem too eager. But she didn’t want to arrive to late; it would seem like she didn’t care.
When the clock hands hit 8, she grabbed her purse and jacket and bolted out the door. “Do you need a ride, honey?” Dina yelled from the kitchen where she was mixing herself a drink.
“No, I’ll grab a taxi! I’ll be home later.” As she slid to a stop by the sidewalk, her cab was already waiting. She had called ahead, insisting the car arrive at 8 sharp.
She gave the cabbie the address, which she had written now on a piece of paper so she wouldn’t lose it. It was close to 8:20 when the car finally stopped outside of a modest apartment building. Lindsay tossed the cabbie her fare and a tip, running across the parking lot like she was running for her life.
She rang the buzzer inside the lobby. An unfamiliar voice responded.
“Uh, hi. This is, uh, Anna’s friend. Lindsay.” She hoped she had gotten the right apartment complex and suite number.
“Hey, come on up!” The girl sounded very nice. She wondered if Anna had told her friends anything about her. And if she had, what had she said?
Stepping out of the elevator, she saw Anna standing across the hallway. She looked just as pretty as she had earlier, but more laid-back with a pair of comfy slippers on her feet. “Hey,” she said, watching the floor as she spoke.
“Hey,” Lindsay said, quietly. “Sorry I’m late.” Anna shook her head bashfully, walking ahead of Lindsay to her friend’s apartment door.
“It’s cool. We haven’t started the movie yet.”
Lindsay stepped inside first, looking around. It was quaint and homey; much like the apartment she and her mother had lived in just after her parents’ split.
Anna introduced Lindsay to all of her friends. They all looked around the same age and didn’t seem to mind that Lindsay was younger; or maybe they didn’t notice. She had always been told she looked mature for her age.
Anna’s friends all sat on a couch in the middle of the living room, Anna on an uncomfortable looking chair on the far side of the room. Lindsay took the only seat left, a soft chair beside the kitchen. She had hoped to sit closer to Anna but doesn’t request it.
Instead, she watched the movie sparingly, spending most of her time glancing in the girl’s direction. It was more interesting than the movie anyway. She noticed that Anna looked bored; that she chewed absentmindedly on the tip of her thumb; that she spun hair around her fingers when she yawned.
The girls on the couch pause the movie for a moment. “We’re just going to run to the store. Do you guys want anything?” Lindsay shrugged. Anna shook her head.
“We’re fine. We’ll just hang here ‘til you get back.” Anna smiled at Lindsay and then to her friends as they left the apartment.
They sat, not talking, for a few minutes when Lindsay’s phone rang. It was Kyle, her boyfriend. He wondered when she was coming home. He wanted to know if he could come over and spend the night. She knew exactly what he wanted, so she told him she wouldn’t be home until late. She hung up abruptly and shifted in her chair, looking in Anna’s direction.
“Sorry, that was just Kyle.”
“Boyfriend?” Anna said, her expression indifferent.
Lindsay shrugged. “Not really. He likes me and I guess I like him a little. I think my mom likes him more than I do, though.” Anna laughed. “So do you like the movie so far?”
Anna nodded. She stood up and walked to the kitchen to top up her drink. Lindsay followed.
“Your friends seem nice.” Lindsay wasn’t sure why she was talking so much. The girl made her nervous; one minute she was speechless, the next she was experiencing verbal diarrhea.
“Yeah, they are. Do you have a lot of friends here?” Lindsay shrugged again.
“It’s hard to make friends, for me. I always wonder about ulterior motives and that sort of thing.” Anna looked confused. Lindsay laughed. “I’ll explain later.” Things were going well with this girl; Lindsay didn’t want to screw it up by telling her what she did for a living.
“Well, you’re a sweet girl. You should have no trouble making friends with a warm smile like that.” Lindsay blushed. She couldn’t believe that hours earlier she had been pining for this woman and was now receiving compliments from her.
“Thank you. How long are you here visiting?”
Anna offered Lindsay a glass of juice. “Just another 3 days. I usually come here once a year.” Lindsay watched intently as Anna sipped from her glass. A droplet of juice still sat on her lip when she pulled the cup away. It dripped down her lip and to her chin. She seemed oblivious.
“You’ve got a little…” Lindsay said, reaching out to wipe the wetness from her chin when Anna grabbed her by the face and kissed her, her mouth still moist and open from the drink.
Lindsay felt like she was falling. Her entire day flashed before her eyes as Anna pushed her against the fridge behind them, slamming the open door shut. She put her hands on top of Anna’s on her own face and pulled herself closer.
No one had ever kissed her like this. Not even Kyle. This was the sort of passionate spontaneous kiss only seen in movies; and far more glamourous than any onscreen kiss she had been part of.
Their hands moved, groping each other urgently but never staying in one place for long. It hadn’t even occurred to them what was happening or where they were until they heard a key in the front door lock.
“Shit!” Anna said, slamming Lindsay into the fridge as she pulled away. She straightened up her own clothes and helped Lindsay to look less disheveled.
The friends entered the kitchen, talking loudly amongst themselves when they found the two girls. Lindsay and Anna stood quietly on opposite sides of the room. They hoped they didn’t look too guilty.
“We’re back!” one said.
“And we brought snacks!” said another, emptying a grocery bag full of chip bags and bright candy packages onto the counter.
“Let’s watch the rest of this movie.”
Anna nodded, looking to Lindsay and walking back toward the living room.
“Actually, I should probably go. My mom is likely wondering where I am.”
The girls nodded, telling Lindsay it had been nice to meet her and sat back on the couch. She returned the sentiment and turned the front door knob. A hand landed on top of hers.
Anna’s face was very close; she felt her breath against her cheek. “You don’t have to go. I’m sorry.”
Lindsay stared at her and pulled the door open. She finally stepped back from Anna as she entered the hallway. “Don’t be sorry. You don’t even know how much you just helped me.”
Anna looked confused again. Lindsay kissed her again, gently. She felt brave to make the first move this time. “You’re welcome?” Anna said, unsure.
Lindsay nodded, walking toward the elevator. She turned back to see Anna still standing in the doorway, a completely baffled look on her face. “Yes, thank you!”
