Aboriginal Day Picnic

Jun 29, 2009 01:58

So, every year, my grandmother organizes a picnic for Aboriginal Day, sponsored by our Metis community. If you're confused about what Metis is, look it up - that's what I am!
It was loads of fun when it wasn't raining. I was supposed to be teaching the Red River Jig to little kids but hardly any showed up so I taught mostly adults instead haha!
Regardless, here are some pictures of the day!

Grand Entry.

My dad (on the left) and cousin Roly.

Smudge - it's a mixture of sweet grasses that is lit, and the smoke is used to bless meals, rooms, etc.

Lunch crowd.

Our Metis council. My grandma, third from the left.

Chatting outside. Grandparents are on the left.

More chatting.

The park and my brother, Brian.

Brother's girlfriend.

Jigging lessons begin.

Ha. I'm so awkward.

I'm actually not sure who had my camera at this point, but I'd like to know haha.

A very attentive student haha!

My aunt and uncle's band.

Dad's girlfriend singing with my aunt and uncle.

Great-Grandma in the white. She's 93, can you believe it?!

Grandpa!

Aunt and Uncle's band again.

Great-Grandma and Dad dancing.

My nametag haha. Was printed before I got chosen as Youth Rep.

Me and brother.

And lucky me...my dad got video footage of my lessons! Ha!
