Neither gone nor forgotten.
It’s been awhile since I posted here. That’s because certain (potential) problems with
my WordPress blog have me posting there on a daily basis for fear that my access to the site might get cut off altogether. I’m stirred to post here because I’ve been getting a little spam. No thanks, not today. Nor tomorrow, nor any day within my lifetime or anyone else’s until the sun swells and either sears the surface of the Earth or swallows it up in its fiery embrace. Besides, stupid spam-vermin, no comments get posted here without my approval and do you think you’ll ever get that? Now a summary of recent doings. The weather has now spent most of its time being utterly foul for the past two weeks. Yesterday was no exception and this afternoon has been doing its best as well to be complete rubbish. We’ve had a scant amount of sunshine and even less blue sky, which has just been visible through a layer of cloud. Term limps feebly to its end with the remains of the classes busy with the IELTS and TOEFL exam prep. I’ve managed to get quite a bit of reading done because I’ve been babysitting the classes. However, that means that when I get to Hong Kong I’m going to need to replenish my supply of books. I made my way through More’s Utopia, which was quite entertaining, but could do with explanatory notes. I’m afraid Hazlitt’s essays seem to be a dull sludge through which you wade rather than glide, waiting for him to say something of interest or make a clearly identifiable point. Was I interested in The Fight? No, not even slightly. Was there a point to The Indian Jugglers? It ends up talking about someone called Cavanagh who played hand fives. There may be other essays of more interest, but my own was rather lost. I’m sure Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations might be of interest if you’re studying Stoic philosophy or even curious to gain some insight into the mind of a Roman emperor, but his writing is like a series of blog entries and should probably be read as such. Well, I see I need to turn my attention to tea.
