I am so muddy! I am so tired! I am so no longer a geology major!

That being said, this is fun.

How long did you live there(KL and S'pore)? I always find it so interesting to meet Singapore expats at the UofC, I don't know why. I make a pretty decent beef rendang (my texan roommate likes it) so if you're ever really craving it, I'd be more than happy to share.

Springhome frozen prata is also a pretty good substitute (you can find it in chinatown). I figured you were more 'malaysian' than 'singaporean' - most singaporeans don't really miss these nasi padang curries, though I do.

I actually never did. My mother went over in the early '80s to help SIMEX in the early stages, while my dad was based in KL, Bangkok and Tokyo doing journalism for about a decade. But when they found out I was on my way, they decided to head back to Chicago. I want to go and visit, though -- I feel like I'm missing out on something important, since I grew up with the food and the knick-knacks they brought home with them but I've missed out on the real animating culture. And I haven't met nearly enough expats, from anywhere! The university is very isolating in some ways, it's hard to reach out to people not in one's house...

What are the things you are interested in here? (Which isn't necessarily the same as what you're studying, or what you'll do "when you grow up," as I'm discovering...)

Oh wow. It's amazing to think you've never actually lived in Asia but identify so strongly with the food. I recently met a British student doing her exchange at the UofC who used to live in Singapore and Hong Kong and has now moved to New York. It's really funny I think because while we have grown up with the same food and places (I grew up in HongKong before moving to Singapore), our cultural experiences are still immensely different ( ... )
