There were two things that Spin tended to do when he was worried: spend too much time making and listening to music in the Band room, and spend too much time listening to and making music out on the grounds. The first was good for providing a distraction for a while, and the latter could sometimes be helpful in finding the perkier beat when everything was starting to sound unpleasant. For now, he was heading out in hopes that he could find that little bight spot in the midst of some of the dragging tunes ( ... )

A melody growing louder told him that someone was coming his way, and Derrick took note at the unsteady beats and the stops. However, Derrick didn't expect for the person to continue to walk his way and address him instead of overlooking him. He opened his eyes to see a student wearing headphones. Derrick new student status must have seemed really obvious. His tapped out beat continued undisturbed for the time being. "Yeah. Just got here."

He glanced at the newcomer, then to his suitcase and skateboard next to where he sat on the bench, and back. Was that was the reason for the nervousness maybe? "Sorry, this your spot?"

That beat was definitely a consistent one, and the way it kept time was odd, but Spin really was trying to avoid jumping to conclusions because wouldn't it be awfully rude. He looked a little surprised when the boy asked if he was sitting in his place. "What? Oh! Um, no, no that's not--I mean, even if it was, it's a big yard, no need to claim, anyway, and... I just wanted to say hi."

He broke a grin that was, as often the case with Spin, awkward but genuine. "Being new around here can be weird, so I thought, you know. Welcome wagon, or something, is good... sometimes..." He sounded like a dork. He hoped the other boy wasn't getting put off. People liked being welcomed by people who actually knew what they were doing. "Um, I'm Spin...?"

Starr had actually just arrived back on campus as well. She'd gone home for Thanksgiving and was now ready to come back to school. Of course, she had to first convince her mom that it was safe to come back to. She knew her mom was worried about her and concerned about things. Starr was too. But, Starr wasn't one to hide and she didn't want to leave this place. She was scared too...but you had to face your problems. Starr needed to be there for her friends and she still had things to learn about her powers and about how to deal with being a mutant in society ( ... )
