Trowa himself was taking a walk, just because it was... stuffy inside. And because his feet were itching with staying in one place for that long. It was outside his norm.

Noticing someone else up ahead with very odd footwear, he walked on and caught the tail end of her sentence.

"Probably because this was land already owned and zoned for construction. And in the south it's too hot."

Toph noticed him approaching before he actually spoke. But she was relaxed, it was just a student after all. She snorted, shoving her fists deeper into the pockets of her hoody, "Pfft. They have enough money coming from enough sources to be able to afford a place with a better climate. And the south is humid, sure, but at least it's easier to go around without footwear."

"Maybe. And enough people who hate us that moving would be taken as running away, even without the south tending towards conservatism. At best."

He paused at the reminder, looking down at her feet again and wondering. Were those warm? They looked like they'd chafe, even if they could be made smooth. "Speaking of which, why are you wearing those? Why not just buy some? They don't look that comfortable."

She appeared to consider this point for a few moments. Finally she nodded, "I imagine the decision might have more to do with the political environment than the climate. Good observation." Toph probably realized that, having been a part of the X-Men and what not. However, she tended to think more about the immediate problems than anything else.

"Well, there's several reasons. For starters, regular shoes would cut me off from my connection to the ground because they're generally made out of things like rubber or plastic. I usually just go around bare foot for that reason...but seeing as temperatures can get in the negatives up here I have to improvise with rock-boots. And they're a lot more comfortable than you would think since I walk without shoes most of the time anyway."

Oh, her feet were cold. That was a real shame. At least the rest of her lower body was kept in relative warmth, huh? Not like she had a vendetta against pants or anything.

Okay, maybe from a logical point of view, Toph didn't like shoes because they made it hard for her to see, while Franky just was stubborn and also from Florida. But the fact was that he was still very cold, very moody about the matter, and still very much opposed to the idea of wearing anything warmer or keeping inside if he didn't want to. No fear of colds would ever dissuade him.

"Christ, this sort of weather is just wrong," he grumbled aloud. "Don't get why anyone would want to live in this place."

Huh, well Franky might be the only guy around here who can really understand Toph's sentiment then. Toph wished the school could be in Flordia. She wouldn't mind being able to hang around outside all year long.

Toph wasn't going to let the cold stop her though, most of the time she just looked at it as another type of training. That didn't make less irritating, but it did make it easier to endure since she was stubborn like that.

"Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. Sometime it feels like I'm surrounded by winter nuts." Well, that happened when you were friends with Icicleboy but she didn't mention that part. She shrugged, "I guess people like to live in a variety of climates...but I would think Xavier could have come up with a more moderate climate for the location."

Franky barely spared Toph a look, instead scowling around at nature as a whole, and bobbing to a dance that was as much keeping the blood flowing as because he felt like it. "It's one thing to prefer some kinda weather, but man, I don't get it."

He shook his head. "Everyone's always talkin' about New York, an' how great it is, aren't they? City that gets this shit every year, it can't be all that great."

Toph let out a loud laugh in agreement. Well, that and the hilarious dance she could feel Franky doing. "Tell me about it. Makes me miss Cali. We may get earthquakes but I can deal with those suckers." Toph shifts her stance, hunching her shoulders to brace against the cold. "I know where I'm going for Winter Vacation...that's for sure."

Jeremie sat under a tree with a book, enjoying the crisp air. He really didn't mind the cold that much. It was being hot that he didn't particularly enjoy. One could always cover themselves further.

He'd borrowed the book from the library, the subject matter being illusions. He supposed he could categorize his own particular power as a subset of that. In any case, it might help him keep his grip on the present while he was viewing the past.

As she strolled across the grounds Toph picked up on the presence of various people mingling around despite the weather. She supposed some people were better with the cold than herself, but it still surprised her to find people outside still.

Toph paused near the tree. "So what brings you out here on this crispy winter day?"

Jeremie looked up from his book to see her. She looked a bit older than your average student. A teacher, maybe. "Just doing some studying. I like it when it's cold." He saw her rock shoes. Rather bizarre footwear. "What about you?"

"I'd much rather be in a warmer climate if that answers your question. But I can always look at this as a personal trial and learn to adapt. It's what we've been doing for centuries as a species at any rate." Hey, she might not look it, but Toph WAS a science person. True, her focus was on the environment and different ecological fields, but everything on earth was connected as far as she was concerned.

She gestured towards him, "What're you studying?" It wasn't as though she could see the book after all.
