Noticing someone else up ahead with very odd footwear, he walked on and caught the tail end of her sentence.
"Probably because this was land already owned and zoned for construction. And in the south it's too hot."

He paused at the reminder, looking down at her feet again and wondering. Were those warm? They looked like they'd chafe, even if they could be made smooth. "Speaking of which, why are you wearing those? Why not just buy some? They don't look that comfortable."

"Well, there's several reasons. For starters, regular shoes would cut me off from my connection to the ground because they're generally made out of things like rubber or plastic. I usually just go around bare foot for that reason...but seeing as temperatures can get in the negatives up here I have to improvise with rock-boots. And they're a lot more comfortable than you would think since I walk without shoes most of the time anyway."

Okay, maybe from a logical point of view, Toph didn't like shoes because they made it hard for her to see, while Franky just was stubborn and also from Florida. But the fact was that he was still very cold, very moody about the matter, and still very much opposed to the idea of wearing anything warmer or keeping inside if he didn't want to. No fear of colds would ever dissuade him.
"Christ, this sort of weather is just wrong," he grumbled aloud. "Don't get why anyone would want to live in this place."

Toph wasn't going to let the cold stop her though, most of the time she just looked at it as another type of training. That didn't make less irritating, but it did make it easier to endure since she was stubborn like that.
"Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. Sometime it feels like I'm surrounded by winter nuts." Well, that happened when you were friends with Icicleboy but she didn't mention that part. She shrugged, "I guess people like to live in a variety of climates...but I would think Xavier could have come up with a more moderate climate for the location."

He shook his head. "Everyone's always talkin' about New York, an' how great it is, aren't they? City that gets this shit every year, it can't be all that great."

He'd borrowed the book from the library, the subject matter being illusions. He supposed he could categorize his own particular power as a subset of that. In any case, it might help him keep his grip on the present while he was viewing the past.

Toph paused near the tree. "So what brings you out here on this crispy winter day?"

She gestured towards him, "What're you studying?" It wasn't as though she could see the book after all.
