Having thought more on the topic of having pink hair at a job, I felt the need to add a few things ( Read more... )

I think what bothers me the most is the idea that only one section of society's preferences count. Like, you can force someone to modify their appearance if they want a job in order to make a certain clientele "comfortable", but it's only ever that one segment of the population who are considered, and they are always kow-towed to no matter how it affects anyone else. Why can't I expect the same treatment - I want to go into stores and see clerks that look like *me*, goddammit, so I think you should all force your employees to get tattooed and dress like goths! Not to mention the fact that this "comfort" thing is just ridiculous (you are pathetic if unusual hair color makes you feel threatened), and the assumption that it should dictate another's life is extremely self-centered ( ... )

I couldn't agree any more. Unfortunately, it tends to be the most easily offended (read: "loudest") part of the population that dictates what "offensive" means. These people should have their barbed sticks up their asses forcibly removed IMNSHO. I must admit, these are all reasons why I absolutely love Eugene. Whilst I'm surprised this happened in PDX, I'd be flabbergasted if this happened in EUG ;-)

I lost my ear piercings because I wasn't allowed to wear earrings as a utility meter reader. So I had to take out my earrings every morning, and by the end of the day the third day they'd closed too much. (They wouldn't even let us have studs in.)

This is why as soon as I have the credentials and experience, I'm going into private practice. I shall be known as the Tattooed Therapist! (Or at least be a therapist with tats.)

I can appreciate that. I still have excessive scar tissue (that manifests as a little bump) in my left ear lobe from taking out my earring every day and then putting it back in over the course of a few years.

The official reason was so that we wouldn't get the earrings torn out of our ears when crawling into bushes to get to meters. I don't see how simply rounded studs would be an issue, though.

I have many issues with this statement, but the biggest would be where it says "better for me". You are denying who you are in pursuit of a career, I am sorry but I really can not see how that is better for you.

It is better for me because, as a person, I like to keep my options open. In all things. It is also much easier as a Shapeshifting Trickster to be able to blend in with whatever group I happen to be infiltrating at the time. Tattoos, piercings, and pink hair are not conducive to "blending in," which is a higher value to me than any particular way I look.

And frankly, I rather enjoy my short hair. I had long hair for well over a decade, and have only had it cut for these past few years.

Yeah you might get a job that pays well, has benefits and long term potential. And this is great, you only had to compromise yourself to get there.Naw. Some people place greater importance on this than I (including past selves), but I really don't care much about the specifics of how I look. What's funny is how--truth be told--I get ( ... )
