“I’m just going to the bathroom.” I answered the nurses questioning eyes as I stood up from my bed. “Five minutes or I coume looking for you!” She called after me as I rushed out of the private room Kai had gotten me three weeks ago. I glanced over my shoulder to see her checking my chart again and I knew I was in the clear. I knew by the time she found me I’d be gargling my own vomit. The thought made me squeeze my eyes shut, but I pushed passed it and continued down the white hallway, checking over my shoulder every now and again.
I was close now… the storage room should be just around the corner. All I had to do was wait until someone left it open and then I could go ahead with my plan. Reita briefly crossed my mind. I knew he was probably shouting at me right now, because I had come to learn that he knew everything I knew. He heard everything I heard, which meant he knew exactly what I was doing.
Much to my surprise, five minutes was all it took. After waiting by the door to another ward, an unnamed doctor opened the door, and in his haste to leave, hadn’t closed it properly behind him. I took my time and paced over to the door, my feet feeling like bricks. I slipped in and shut it behind me. I could almost feel the sweat dripping from my palms, but I wiped them on my pyjama bottoms and quickly went to search the dozens of shelves.
“Ruki!” A voice suddenly called from the hallway, making me jump and scramble behind a nearby shelf. “It’s been ten minutes now!” The nurse persisted. I saw he chubby form scurrying passed and in the direction of the bathrooms. I breathed a sigh of relief, before I saw her backtrack, peer into the small window in the door and spot me, her eyes suddenly incredulous.
“Wh-What are you doing?!” She yelled before calling for help. I guessed she didn’t have a key, but I was still panicking. In a haze, I grabbed a disposable scalpel from a shelf and ripped it from it’s glossy package, my other hand fumbled around the shelf in search of something, anything that could bring me what I desired. By now, I had knocked over several bottles onto the ground and there were pills everywhere, but I managed to secure a bottle in my hand, and I quickly thumbed the cap off before the door burst open. My eyes shot up to the door and my hands were shaking so much that pills from the newly opened bottle joined the others on the floor. Scanning the crowd, I raised the scalpel in the direction of the oncoming people.
“S-Stay back!” I yelled, my voice hoarse. The nurse looked at me with disbelief before I saw Dr. Miles emerge from behind her, his face etched with confusion. There were more people behind them, but the closer they came, the blurrier they looked.
“Ruki, just put the weapon down…” Dr. Miles said calmly, his hands raised and his feet inching their way towards me. Just in spite, I raised the scalpel higher, my hand shaking and my eyes watering so much that I could barely see.
And with that, I tipped the contents of the pill bottle into my mouth, chewing each pill into dust that soon began to fizzle bitterly against my tongue.

The elevator door opened and I stepped out, my jacket draped over one arm and flowers clutched tightly in my hand. Visiting Ruki had become part of my daily schedule since Aoi and Kai had left for Paris, and I was almost beginning to find it therapeutic. As well as that, since Aoi had been away for almost three weeks now, I was actually starting to miss him. I even felt a rush of embarrassment and silliness whenever I thought about the worries I had concerning our relationship. They all seemed so miniscule now. I knew everything was going to be fine.
I was quickly pulled out of my thoughts by a stampede of doctors and nurses running down the hallway. Backed into a wall, I picked up the name ’Matsumoto Takanori’ amidst the chaos. Whatever they were running to, Ruki was involved, and with that thought spurring me on, I broke into a run, dropping the flowers and making my way to the epicentre of the problem; what looked like a small cupboard for storing medicine.
My heart stopped, but my feet kept going, dragging me passed the doctors, passed the nurses and passed the other patients that had come to watch the show. “Excuse me! Please! My friend!” I tried to shout, but my voice was drowned out by the noise. I could just make out the top of Ruki’s head by now, and I panicked, yelping as I heard a crash and felt the sea of people surging forward. After I had managed to push past the frontlines, I saw a sight that almost made me sick. There on the ground, was Ruki, my best friend, violently shaking, vomit and blood mixing on his cheek and his hand out stretched in my direction. I dropped to my knees beside him and took his hand to my chest as the doctors swirled around me in search of more doctors and more help. I felt something slipped into my hand. It felt like paper, but I didn’t read it; I was too busy sobbing and watching how Ruki’s eyes were rolling into the back of his head.
“Ruki! Ruki!” Someone shouted, and it wasn’t until I felt myself being pulled away that I realise it was me shouting. I struggled, but of course, that only provoked more people to pull me out, and eventually their strength was far greater than my own.
The last thing I saw was the doctor sticking his fingers into Ruki’s mouth before I lost sight of my best friend.

I didn’t hear the phone ring until I opened my eyes. Aoi was either ignoring it, or he was so deep in slumber that he wasn’t disturbed by the harsh shrill ring that demanded our attention. Nevertheless, I nudged him until he stirred and groaned. “What the fuck?” He asked when he realised not only was there a phone ringing, but it was our phone.
I wiped the groggy sleep from my eyes as he stood up and marched his way over to the phone mounted on the wall. Whoever is was was about to be sorry they called, because Aoi had very little patience when it came to his sleep.
“What?!” He answered the phone with a growl, and I felt a pang of guilt hit me. Maybe I should have answered the phone. I would have done it so much more calmly.
There was a pause in which Aoi’s face turned blank. He looked over his shoulder at me briefly, but said nothing.
“Uruha?” He asked, his voice still sleepy.
I shot up in the bed, so fast that I could’ve given whiplash. Why was Uruha calling? And at such an ungodly hour? He knew. The first thing I thought was that he knew about me and Aoi, but the sudden cry from Aoi told me otherwise.
“What do you mean?! When?!”
Something was wrong. I whipped the duvet off my body and stumbled through the darkness towards Aoi. When I laid my hand on his shoulder, all I could feel was his shaking. “Aoi? What is it, what happened?” I asked impatiently.
“What do you mean a coma?” Aoi suddenly shouted, making me jump. “When did this happen?” He continued, slamming his fist against the table, and letting out a sob. Aoi dropped the phone and let it hang from the coiled cable for a moment before turning to me. “Kai!”
The desperation in his voice was scary. I said nothing, only brushed passed him and grasped the receiver. “Uruha? What’s happened?” I asked as calmly as I could. There was a choking sound on the other end and I suddenly felt my eyes fill with tears. I knew what he was going to say but it didn’t prepare me for the anguish that his words would bring.
“Ruki…’s in a coma.” He struggled. “K-Kai!” He said so desperately that it reminded me of Aoi only moments ago. “Kai! I don’t know what to do. I need someone… I can’t on my own…” My mind was racing. All I could hear were Aoi’s sobs and the sound of my own heart beating in my ears, so crisp that I was scared to look down at my chest in case it might be ripped open and my organs splayed on the ground.
“What?” Was all I could manage, but the sounds of Uruha’s cries made the guilt inside me so prominent that I wanted to vomit it all out. Was this what it was going to sound like when he found out about Aoi and I?
“’Ruha,” I tried, my voice far from calm at this stage. “’Ruha, shh. Don’t worry, we’re coming home. We’re leaving now.”
“I’ll wait for you,” He replied. “Please hurry.”
I hung up the phone and turned to Aoi, relieved to see him already packing his suitcase, albeit in a hurried and messy manner. I entered the room and didn’t dare say a word, only taking my suitcase and beginning to pack in the same manner as Aoi was. My eyes flickered up to him, to make sure he was alright. His eyebrows were dipped down in the middle, his cheeks wet and he was muttering something to himself.
“Aoi?” I tried, but he ignored me. “Yuu.” I wasn’t sure if it was the use of his real name or the way my voice cracked that made him look at me. I didn’t realise I was crying until he reached out and wiped the tears off my cheeks. “What’s happening?” I asked, hoping he had an answer, hoping he would crack a smile and tell me it was all a joke, or a bad dream. But harsh reality hit me hard the minute I saw a fresh set of tears falling onto Aoi’s cheeks.
“I don’t know. We just need to get home.” And with his words, he took me into his arms, muttering his affections for me in my ear. His arms didn’t feel like snakes this time, but soft ribbons of love that soothed my heart back into a steady rhythm.

“Are you insane?!”
Reita’s shout was so loud I was sure the trees around us rustled because of it’s force. I sat on the grass, prepared for the earful I was about to get from him. He looked so angry that I almost felt guilty for putting myself into a coma. Didn’t he understand how much I wanted to be with him? Didn’t he know how much I cared for him, loved him, even? I can’t say I hadn’t been expecting this, but he was being much more fierce than I had imagined he ever could be.
My insides squirmed as I noticed how heavy his breathing had become. Averting my gaze from him, I played with one of the pink flowers in front of me.
“I told you not to do anything stupid, and look what you’ve done! Are you even listening to me, Ru?!” My eyes shot up to him. Of course I was listening! I was hanging on his every word, for Christ’s sake! “Why, Ruki?” He asked, his voice suddenly calm. “Why?”
I didn’t know what to say. I just sat there, stunned. It was only when my lower lip began to tremble and the tears began to fall that his face softened. He took a seat in the flowers in front of me, his eyebrows dipped with worry.
“I…” He began, and for a second, I thought he was going to apologise. “I don’t want you ruining your life for me. Why can’t you see that?”
I blanked, unsure of what he wanted me to say. “Because I’m stubborn,” I replied. He must have thought I was joking, because he opened his mouth to shout and argue yet again. I raised my hand to silence him. “Because I’m stubborn and childish and I go after what I want,” I began again as calmly as I could manage. He looked confused for a minute, so I went on.
“Do you realise how hard this is? You being inside my head and us not even being able to touch… It’s torture. It’s easy for you to go on about me living a long and healthy life,” My voice had started to shake at this stage, and I could feel a lump surfacing in my throat, but I pushed passed it. He needed to hear what I had to say. “But you have no idea what it’s like out there without you.”
He opened his mouth, but said nothing. I could feel the moisture on my cheeks, but I wouldn’t let my emotions deter my speech.
“You just don’t understand!” A sudden jolt of anger shot through me as I shouted, and I stoop up, glaring at him. “Don’t you know how hard it is?! I love you, for fuck sake!”
My words rang out in the silence and I widened my eyes. Well, now Reita knew. Know he knew I loved him. He looked as shocked as I did before he stood up. He had this new look on his face, like he had decided on something of great importance. Like he was determined.
“I’m going to touch you.” He warned, and all I could do was nod. All the burns he had given me before could never hurt as much as my heart was aching now, and I decided right there that I would rather turn to ash than never feel his touch.
I waited, with my eyes tightly shut, to receive the finishing blow, the scorching touch that would never end until it consumed me.
But it never came. Not even the slightest bit of warmth. For a fleeting moment, I imagined that the flames had engulfed my body so fast that death had come, painlessly. I focused on the feeling of his fingertips running through my hair, happy now that I was in heaven, with the person I loved. What more could I want?
“Ruki?” He asked, his voice surprised. “Ruki… Does it hurt?” I shook my head. “Your hand is soft… It’s nice to finally be able to feel your touch…” I knew I was smiling, and my tears had cleared up, but Reita startled me with a sudden laugh and grabbed my hand.
“Ruki! I can finally touch you!” He practically yelled, his fingers running along the skin on my arm in amazment. He paused for a moment before his soft hand cupped my jaw and he pulled me into a tender first kiss.
