Nicks Eulogy

Aug 05, 2008 21:00

We had Nick's funeral yesterday. The funeral was for close family and friends, but I know that many of you knew him well. So I've posted the eulogy I made at the funeral (along with a few photos) for everyone to read.

Nicholas John Ireland. 1st August 1978 - 13th July 2008 )

Oh Ant.... Sitting here laughing and crying at the same time. You've written so beautifully and thoughtfully about such a great guy. We were all very lucky to have Nick in our lives. So yes, I promise to listen more. Thinking of you, your family and all those who knew Nick so much better than I did. x

I had come back from trekking in Nepal and was talking to Nick in the pub, he looked at me and said 'Well, I smoke, so probably the altitude would completely do for me. best not do that, eh?'. So I said 'nah, your lungs are already used to having no oxygen. If you can lay off the fags for a few days you'll do better than everyone else out there. Besides, all the sherpas smoked like chimneys'. Cue sudden look of surprise and enthusiasm.

I don't suppose he ever did do a high trek to see if I was talking bollocks or not did he?

Be happy Nick wherever you are.

My favorite memory will always be that time we went to Phoenix.

Up drinking all night, dancing round the campfire....the night drew to a close and brothers Ireland had a large argument about whether Nick should stay with us or go back to his own tent(probably a couple miles walk away). After what seemed like rather a long time Nick stormed off with a "Don't patronize me!!" and colorful words to the effect that he could make it to his own tent.

We later found out he made it approximately 100m and fell asleep under a hedge (not a good idea at a festival really). Classic. We used to remind him of it every time saw him.

I'll miss him loads, as I said to Sahar after the funeral, he was almost too nice a guy. Perhaps that was his problem, the world is sometimes not kind to nice people.

In any case I'll always remember him as the happy go lucky kid who never (in my eyes at least) grew up.

Nick
