Summary:
Kyuhyun had always loved to have a window by his bed where he could write by. However, as far as he was concerned, he has not written anything constructive for ages. Not since he could never look at the large glass window pane again and not feel the hairs stand at the back of his neck. Not since he begin to spend every waking moment in fear and every sleeping one restless.  And definitely not since the indistinguishable eerie sounds visited him resoundingly by the moonlit window almost every night.
Maybe he was listening to more than he can hear.

Chapter 4

“Ah Heechul-hyung! Wait for me, hyunggggggg,” Someone was shouting his name across the street.

Heechul recognised the loud yet mellow voice immediately. Darn it, now he would have to make a run for it. And Kim Heechul did not like running. It made him sweaty.

“Where are you going, hyung?”

Choi Siwon quickened his step and before long was right beside the older boy on the sidewalk. “Aish, how can you always catch up so fast?” Heechul rolled his eyes and considerably slowed down his pace. There was no point running anymore away from this clingy guy.

“Erm, longer legs?” Siwon offered as-a-matter-of-factly.

“Ah, just go away,” The shorter man turned into a corner and continued walking briskly. Siwon knew better than to say more and kept up with the pace. He couldn’t see his hyung’s face because a large portion of it was covered by big, white-framed sunglasses. His facial expression was hard to read but it was no feat to predict that it was probably grumpy and not very pleasant.

Was it one of those days again?

Heechul continued walking without a word until he reached a small, brightly-lit café. The door opened with a soft jingling of bells and a few heads turned. Welcoming greetings and the tantalizing aroma of bittersweet coffee filled the air as they both entered.

Siwon couldn’t help but notice that more eyes were on his Heechul-hyung than him. His face unconsciously turned sulky from the disappointment as he stood by the counter together with the older boy.

He couldn’t quite put a finger on it; he worked out almost every day and Heechul barely lifted a finger and was almost always associated with either the word ‘gay’ or ‘effeminate’. Perhaps it was the confidence that he was losing out on.

Yeah, Siwon decided that his bedtime prayer that night would be about self-confidence.

A cheery-faced waitress with a high ponytail greeted them again. “One Double Choco-Latte, ice-blended.” A pause. And then a painful nudge in the rib.

“Ouch, aah -yeah...err, black coffee for me, thanks,” he clapped his hands together in front of his face as a sign of gratitude. When the girl turned away to make their coffee, Siwon rubbed himself where an elbow recently connected to. They proceeded to sit by a window after paying; Heechul’s usual table by the window.

Even as the beverages were served at their table, Heechul hadn’t uttered a word. Siwon couldn’t help noticing the way he was fidgeting with his hair and sunglasses. Why did he even need sunshades inside the building?

Siwon shrugged; he should’ve stopped trying to understand how the older man’s mind worked by now. Principles in the fields of business and accounts he was sure of, but there he’d never even try to tread on. He stole one look and caught the man pursing his lips together and then taking a sip of his drink; face visibly still disturbed by something.

Fear of failing was one thing, but dangerous zones like this should not be attempted.

He stirred his black coffee absent-mindedly and enjoyed the aroma. No cream, no sugar, just black and bitter; exactly like how he liked his coffee to be. Oh God, thank you for coffee. He murmered an apology under his breath and reconstructed that thought so that it didn’t sound like he had said the Creator’s name in vain.

“Siwonnie.”

“Yes, hyung?” he was in the middle of that prayer when he heard his name. The other man put his beverage down and had finally taken off his sunglasses, revealing eyes that were obviously furious with something.

“Yah, don’t you ever get tired of following me around?”  Heechul couldn’t take the stalking anymore and if he had to be rude to get his point across, he definitely wouldn’t do it any other way.

“Huh?” he nearly spilled his coffee. “What do you mean?”

“You’ve been following me around since god knows when. You think it’s subtle, Choi Siwon. But you’re so damn annoying.”

Anybody else would’ve been very taken aback and felt very insulted by those harsh words coming from the lean, cocky man. Well, they would’ve likely taken a punch at him. But Choi Siwon wasn’t just anybody. He had God by his side.

“Hyung…I’m sorry if I annoyed you.” He held his hands up in front of him.” But did something else happen?”

Heechul’s mind fleeted to the image of the choking ghost by the living boy’s feet back a few days ago. No,he clenched his fist slightly; he promised himself he wouldn’t care. Not anymore.

“Nothing you should poke your nose in! I may act childish sometimes, but I am not a child, and definitely not your child! So quit it!” he was clutching his sunglasses so hard that Siwon was afraid that it would come flying at his face the next second. His hyung did have a habit of throwing things around when he was sporting a tantrum. The brown stain on the kitchen wall back at the apartment they shared was more than enough proof for that.

By this time the café was deserted and he wondered if they had scared off the other customers. Siwon could perfectly understand that. But thanks to that he can now knock some serious sense into the other man’s small little feminine head.

“But don’t you see them less when I’m around?”

He could see the older man hesitate for a split second before his nostril flared.

“I’ve been in this longer than you’ve been around, I can handle it. I don’t need you hovering at my heels the whole time!” Heechul really felt the urge to throw something, his face flushing with warmth. Why couldn’t his dongsaeng understand just how suffocating it was?

“We both know what happens when you’re alone.”

“I hope you remember that I attend classes on my own most of the time. What’s the point of it?” he rolled his eyes, slumping backwards into his chair.

“If I could follow you to class, I would. But I have my own to attend to, so let me do it during the times when I actually can,” Siwon reprimanded.

He continued when the other man sucked a mouthful of his iced beverage angrily.

“They make you sick. I’m not going to let you forget the time we found you literally lying in the gutter, unconscious with your own vomit stuck on your shirt. “Siwon crinkled his brows and nose slightly at that memory.”Or the time you ended up in the hospital. They were about to put you in the asylum!”

Heechul’s face was definitely red by now. He really didn’t need any more reminders about his past experiences.

“Haven’t I told you about ten million times before that I haven’t been out looking for them anymore? They come on their own!”

But Siwon was either deaf or pretended to be.

“-and that time you disappeared for a whole three days. Hangeng-hyung and I almost called the police.”

“Don’t say his name.” Something else far more ominous was dancing in the older man’s eyes.

Siwon knew he had touched a nerve but he knew he had to go there to settle the matter. For now, at least.

“Hangeng-hyung asked me to protect you. And even if he didn’t, damn me to hell if I don’t.”

Steely eyes stared into fiery ones.

“It was supposed to be his job. So where the hell is he now? I don’t need protecting from you or his damn orders. He’s out of my life, so you stay out of it too,” Heechul finally responded coolly, pushing his chair backwards as he stood up.

“I’m going to visit Donghae at the supermarket, so don’t bother anymore to follow me. Or I swear I’ll go search for one and jump right in front of it.”

And with that Siwon was left alone at the table with his half-cup of coffee as the doors jingled to a close. He pressed his lips to the mug and gulped down some. The coffee had gone stale-cold and didn’t taste bitter anymore.

His mouth had a stronger bitter taste than that.
