Summary:
Kyuhyun had always loved to have a window by his bed where he could write by. However, as far as he was concerned, he has not written anything constructive for ages. Not since he could never look at the large glass window pane again and not feel the hairs stand at the back of his neck. Not since he begin to spend every waking moment in fear and every sleeping one restless.  And definitely not since the indistinguishable eerie sounds visited him resoundingly by the moonlit window almost every night.

Maybe he was listening to more than he can hear.

Chapter 3

This place seemed so familiar.

And why was he standing outside on the road alone?

Stationary cars lined up along the street and sounds of the bustling main street down the road hummed overhead. Two tall buildings faced each other, sandwiching the road he was on. It seemed like a quiet day. The surrounding trees swayed as a light breeze ran through them.

He didn’t remember going downstairs for anything. He had just only restocked the fridge yesterday. He remembered buying food supplies that would last him for at least the rest of the week. Milk, rice, brown sugar, kimchi, choco pie, Pepero sticks… what else had he forgotten? Monthly bills were already paid; the gas was definitely still full. Well, from the last time he checked anyway. And when was that again?

He couldn’t remember.

He searched for his cell phone and found nothing in his pockets. As he looked around he noticed a boy with jet-black hair clutching a thin string attached to a red balloon walking down the road he was on, heading to the main street. The boy couldn’t have been any older than seven. He gasped slightly as he watched the balloon float away from the boy’s grip.

“Yah!” he managed to croak. The boy didn’t turn back.

He stared blankly as the boy disappeared down the street. That was strange; the boy must’ve not heard him. Another breeze blew and a woman wearing a tight-fitting electric blue jacket and black leggings walked past him and disappeared among decorative trees into a building. He recognized her as that pretty neighbour who lived two floors down his apartment.  Something inside compelled him to follow suit and he did.

Right, he lived here too.

Which floor was it again? Sixth? Seventh? Was he supposed to be doing something? What was it? Why was he out here alone? Why? How?

Anxiety filled him and the next moment he knew visions flooded his mind.

His knees slammed onto the ground. The surroundings had somehow blended together and were now a wild collection of whirling colours. Clammy hands were clutching his throat and the fear of not breathing crept in and slowly strangled him, invisible fingers clawing at his windpipe. He gasped for air.

He couldn’t breathe, couldn’t breathe.

Air was sucked out of him literally.  His lungs; his lungs deflated and flew away like that child’s red balloon. And suddenly he was outside his bedroom window, looking inside. Someone else was sleeping in his bed.

It didn’t take him very long to realise that he was dead.

“I don’t even know who Ddangkoma is.”

“Sorry I totally forgot to introduce you two! Say hi!” Yesung held up a rectangular glass aquarium and grinned. Kyuhyun blinked and a tiny, black and round pair of tortoise eyes blinked back.

“Ddangkoma’s a... tortoise?” Kyuhyun huffed in surprise, finally placing down two luggage bags and a heavy knapsack in the doorway.

“Not really, he’s a turtle. A land turtle. Where should I place him? Hmm...” Yesung didn’t seem to notice the annoyed look the younger boy was making. He scanned the living room, looking for a suitable spot to place the rectangular glass aquarium.

“Why don’t you ask your family to move in as well?”

“You know I can’t, Kyu. They live so far away.” The guy seemed ignorant at recognizing snarky comments.

He really didn’t know how he had landed himself in the situation. The main idea of moving to Seoul alone and enrolling into the course he wanted was so that he could be alone; on his own; independent and every other word or phrase that meant the same. Or at least he hoped he was.

Kyuhyun tried again.

“I still don’t know why you’re doing this.”

The bespectacled boy delightedly found an end table and placed the glass aquarium on it carefully, grinning as he peered at the reptile inside. “Well, you sure looked like you need some help and company. So here I am!”

“I told you, I’m fine. I just need, uh...some rest, that’s all.” Kyuhyun didn’t know he was this bad at lying because the other boy frowned and lifted up a lecturing finger. “Is falling asleep in class fine? Is getting penalized by lecturers fine? Is hearing sounds no one is making fine?”

Kyuhyun knew his hyung had a point there but surely it didn’t mean he had the right to move into the apartment; HIS apartment, which HE rented with HIS money.

“But-“He wanted to retaliate but was cut short.

“Why do you need such a big place on your own anyway? You rented the whole place! No wonder you’re hearing things.” Jongwoon looked around the living room. It was practically empty, save for a small television and a moth-eaten couch plus the end table, which he can proudly declare, was now Ddangkoma’s.

He walked over to the glass sliding door before the balcony

Outside he could see a myriad of buildings amidst tall trees. The sun was already setting and the sky was a pretty mixture of orange and pink. “Not a bad view,” he whistled while tapping on the glass door.

Shivers ran along Kyuhyun’s spine at the sound.

“Stop doing that.”

“What? This?” Jongwoon used his fingers to tap on the pane again, puzzled.

“Yah! Stop that!” Unknowingly he lunged forward, accidently tripping over one of Yesung’s luggage bags. His breathing was uneven and his big toe throbbed in pain as he sat up on the floor. Everyone was silent at the sudden outburst. Even Ddangkoma stopped chewing on his lettuce and stared at them unblinkingly.

“I’m sorry,” Yesung stooped down beside him and gazed at him earnestly. “I didn’t know you don’t like people messing with your balcony door.”

Kyuhyun shook his head and tried to clear his mind.

“Sometimes I hear that at night, when I’m alone. The other night the usual choking sound was there, but tapping came later too. Yah, I really don’t know what’s wrong with me. I keep on hearing all these weird stuff. I think I might’ve really lost it,” he said, cradling his head in his hands.

“Hey, I don’t think you’re going crazy, okay? Sometimes I hear noises too, when I’m my own. But most of the time it’s Ddangkoma scratching against the glass or the neighbour next door. Which...by the way, have you ever checked if it’s the neighbours?” Jongwoon said and then asked quizzically. Kyuhyun lifted his head with a sigh. Drum roll, please.

“I happen to live on an empty floor, ta-daa!” he said in a lacklustre tone.

“You sure have the weirdest luck ever. How could you ever move into such a big apartment on your own? You don’t think it’s anything...supernatural, do you?”

“I really don’t know what to think about that,” Kyuhyun gulped silently. He liked writing, very much, and has explored many genres but horror was never his favourite genre. Simply because -as much as he hated to admit -scared him. He twitched slightly when he thought he saw something move.

“If it is then it’s pretty cool. What about your parents? “Yesung stood up heedlessly and made his way into the hallway, inspecting the walls as he went. The apartment seemed decent, to the very least. He opened the first door on the left.

“Is this your...room?” Jongwoon’s gaze landed first on the number of planks nailed roughly onto the wall which hid what he guessed would be a window. Then he noticed a double bed pushed to the far right corner of the medium-sized room. There were scrunches of paper littering the floor where a small wooden desk and chair stood at another corner. He supposed this was where the hopeful writer works on his collection of stories and assignments. And play Starcraft. He noticed two laptops sitting side by side on the desk, with connecting wires running along the side of the floor.

“They...well, they’re just, uh, back home. Aish, don’t ask so much, will you?” He shrugged as he caught on the older boy staring silently into his room.

“It’s not that big, this place. I just wanted to be on my own,” he said, closing the door before them.

Kyuhyun noticed his hyung caught up in his own thinking for a while.

“You see, that’s why you’ll need me around. To keep you in check! By the way, I think you did a horrible job closing up that window. I’m sure Ddangkoma would agree if he saw that,” he remarked, walking to the next door.

“You’re pretending not to listen, aren’t you?” Kyuhyun gave up and slumped on the sofa. It’s weird, now that he thought about it; he didn’t hear any weird noises today.

“I’m not, actually. Ah, this will be my room!” He couldn’t believe his senior actually picked the laundry room.

“Oh come on,” he lamented, checking into the kitchen now,” I’ll help with the rent. I wouldn’t be here if I could be back at my old place. My ex-roommate didn’t like Ddangkoma too much.”

“Ah, so that’s the real deal, ain’t it? You’re only here ‘cause you’ve got nowhere to stay!” he shouted to the kitchen, frowning upon the heap of luggage and assortments of things lying in a pile near the door.

“Yeah, well, at least you won’t be alone when it happens, right?”

Kyuhyun quieten down and laid back into his moth-eaten couch. There was some truth in there. It wouldn’t be so bad if someone was around.

At least he’d know if he was really going crazy when something happens; he admitted to it secretly.

“Come on, you still need to help me with my keyboard!” Yesung was already disappearing halfway out of the main door.

Kyuhyun stared helplessly at the empty doorway and then at the tortoise which resumed its chewing not long ago.

Ddangkoma turned and started moving away.
