Oh Dean! Pushing her away. He shows his concern in a funny way doesn't he?!!!

Her marking where the guy was lying/telling the truth was very clever. Poor Charlie *pets her*.

Loved all the Duran Duran refs, and Dean knowing the video!!

Dean truly is one messed up SOB sometimes... But the reaction is canon, I think. I mean, consider all that he's said to Sam in the course of the series.

Yes, Charlie was clever. That's part of the guilt.

And, yeah, the Duranie in me had to go there.

Okay ... I really want to slap Dean for being a complete arse to Charlie, and I want to hug him for being a complete arse to Charlie ... Does that make sense ( ... )

This chapter was really hard for me to write, because Dean is so messed up - his heart is totally in the right place, but being a casualty of what it is like to grow up a Winchester, he's dysfunctional as all hell. The worst part was that he *knew* he was being an ass, but did it anyway because he hates himself so much that he doesn't want someone he's beginning to care about to hurt because of him.

Of course, he's an asshole about how he does things.

Dean has a power where he feels what others are feeling, this empathy must be a real kick in the teeth for him. I loved the interchange with Arlene in part one - how he knew what she was thinking: tame him, he's the one. She's probably just sharing the thoughts and aspirations of most of the one night stands he's had over the years ...This is actually an observation I was hoping someone would make. Dean is definitely starting to feel the effects of his gift, and he has no clue how to control it. (It's not like Charlie has had a lot of time to teach him how to use it, either.) That' ( ... )

Oh, my, is Dean a complete asshole in this! Honestly, if Charlie -ever- forgives him for that behavior, she has no backbone whatsoever.

Yeah, this one just made me mad.

He can be an asshole. And he's not the most functional card in the deck. Coupled with his huge guilt complex and low self-esteem, Dean Winchester came up with the extraordinarily stupid idea to push her away. He's frustrated and angry that she seems to be getting hurt every time she helps him, and the part of him that won't vocalize that he doesn't deserve it (and isn't worth anyone's sacrifice) is the same part that is trying to push her away.

Which sounds like I'm defending him...but I don't mean to be. Even Dean knew he was hurting her throughout the whole chapter. And he knew what he was doing was wrong.

But, you know, this being me...there's probably a wee bit more going on here, too.

I've dealt with people like that. Eventually, it's no longer an excuse.

Totally agree with you there... Still not certain how this whole thing is going to turn out between Dean and Charlie, at least in the short-term, but I'm guessing it's pretty much time for Dean Winchester to make a choice and stick with it.

Dean, you BASTARD! So what if you're just trying to protect the girl, and yourself, or whatever, but Charlie's already taken enough hard knocks. Personally, I've always found sweet, sweet lovin' to be a perfectly legitimate form of protection. Maybe you ought to try that instead. ;)

Aaand, if I can tear myself away from chastising a fictional character I might be able to bring myself to comment on how much this fic rocks like Slayer.

Hmmm...I bet Dean likes Slayer. ;)

Dean, as I have been saying most of this evening, is one messed up SOB. And, yes, she's been through a lot of hard knocks... All I'm asking is that you trust me. ;-P

We shall keep this in mind. ;-P

Thank you!

So not taking that bet.

Yeah, he's being class-A patented Winchester Bastard, which is both his and John's default reaction to being in a situation that they can't control and that scares them (generally interacting with other people).

I much prefer Dean when he is being snarky, personally. But the messed up emotional bits are an important flaw, and to explore that, I kind of had to explore that. Deep down, Dean really believes that he is too broken to be fixed. Even if he doesn't admit that to himself.

And yet... This same man would stand in a puddle of water and electrocute himself to save two children from a demon in a basement. I think it's the dichotomy of his inner darkness versus his self-sacrifice that makes him such an interesting character.

That being said, I spent as much time wanting to smack him while I wrote this chapter than anything else. And I know what's going on better than anyone right now. ;-p

It's just as well Charlie is an empath really. Strong women often do end up forgiving what should really be seen as unforgivable ( ... )

He doesn't think of himself as much more than a function or a commodity than a proper deserving person. It's really very sad.

He really does think of himself as a commodity. A good little soldier in his father's war.

And just because you know why someone's acting out doesn't mean you don't want to slap them.

I would imagine it would be doubly so in his case, given that he has the social skills of a wooden plank. Oh, so going to remember that comment until I get to immortalize it in print. If you do not mind. But it's so true.

well, I figured he'd be shouting emotionally anyhow

Oh, he's a goddamn hurricane...
