I absolutely agree with regards to the management vs CS, besides I dont think IT provides very good prospects these days unless you're a entrepreneur because there are so many IT "specialists" around, esp in HK. I think may be its worth talking to your mum/aunt about it and make sure they understand that it's something you're not passionate about and will probably not do well in it (academically or career wise
( ... )
*nods* i think there's definitely too many people doing IT in HK... my dad's mentioned that, like... he thinks it's more important to have fun and enjoy uni than getting good grades? but my family's not too male-orientated ^^;;
academic route...?! well my problem with PhDs is that I have no idea what i want to research about. which kinda defeats the point XDD;;; plus this whole further education thing is more about "getting a job and earning money" than "finding a job"
What the world needs is communications-trained science graduates, not pseudoscience-scribbling journalism graduates.:P Especially in Asia where science is so conflated with superstition and general nonsense.XD
I will say though, communications jobs in general are poorly paid compared to most other sectors, but then again CompSci jobs also get paid relative peanuts (why do you think most software companies in the West are outsourcing programming to Asia? BECAUSE WE WORK CHEAP.:P). I say go for the one that you're really interested in rather than the one you're sort-of/not interested in just to get a job. Your science background will give you an advantage if you go into advertising/copywriting, especially for agencies that have pharma manufacturing accounts. though you'll probably have to come up with a lot of pseudoscience in those jobs lol.
*nods so much her head's about to fall off* my mum did communication for her degree, so she should know that there is so little proper science exposure in HK... yet the first thing she said was "yeah, no one does it so you won't get a job!" orz
Hahah yeah true! But I don't think I was really made for the high paying jobs... i can't seem to bring myself to like banking or the finance industry at all XDD it's so confusing. that's my thinking as well, coz i applied to CS last year and failed XDD;; even if i did get in, i think i wouldn't be enjoying it as much? although as long as i haven't actually tried science communication it's hard to say...
and i've tried pharmaeuticals! they just didn't accept me ;__; i'll give it another try after this school year, depending on what happens... hahah my dream would be to work for like... a large news agency? but just... write articles about interesting/amusing science articles? but who knows :P
hahah yeah!! my mum told me to do CS in the first place because i told her ages ago i didn't really like talking to strangers... which is true, but i can still hold and make proper conversation if needed... >__>;;
Probably wouldn't recommend CS if you're planning on working in HK. Someone in my year did that and ended up working doing something related at HSBC, but pay is low and the position it too easily replaceable. Now he's been unemployed for a while. :(
Yeah I thought so... a lot of people seem to be doing IT/business, which makes it harder to get into and the pay much lower because of the vast supply... my dad was saying if i had to do a further degree to do one more specialised, but my mum is saying it has to land me a job when i'm done, unlike my current one XD;;
my dad actually told me to be an undertaker because it was one type of job that is necessary in the whole world... so glad he was joking x___x;;
