So it turns out you can fashion a reasonable hide-out in the basement, as long as you are willing to make your own fun. Which is probably the best explanation for the signs up on the walls, saying things like "STAY OUT", "NO PARENTS ALLOWED", and "THERE ARE RATS DOWN HERE EW", with little seahorses doodled all around the letters ( Read more... )

Lane waited for her mother to get involved in what promised to be a long conversation with the ethics teacher, and then walked the other way. Quickly.

She saw a familiar figure head into a door marked BASEMENT and followed Rory, feeling like a spy. "Rory? Is there something cool down here?" she called.

"Yay, friends," Lane said happily. "Mama is talking to one of the teachers. I told her something about the library and kind of walked away really, really fast before she could say anything."

Then gave Jaye a Bzuh? face. "I don't have a cat."

"I want a cat," Lane said. "But my parents have a thing about the fur." She shrugged. "I was going to get a black cat and call it either Dylan or Pixie."

"Not exactly," Alec put in somewhat ruefully. "But anyone who'd be here for me wouldn't exactly be interested in how my classes were going. Plus, Jaye would be all alone here in the basement without me, and that's no fun."
