Interesting watching on BBC Ray Mears' Wild Food where he's working with some Australian Aborigines to see how hunter gatherers get food. Some of the tools are so temporary and would be dismissed as broken shells or would have rotted away, beautifully woven bags and everything. That fire was so important. because one of your knitting needles broke? and so you only had one?? so you had to find someway of creating with the just one...i think the hook part came later. (:) I have no idea in acutality, odd to wonder how things came about tho

Tunisian crochet has a long needle with a hook.

The other question is which came first double pointed needles or single...

I read a strange history of knitting several years back. It stated that the robe the Christ was wearing had been KNITTED in 1 piece & that a museum in England had an example of a single knitting needdle used by itself ~ I never mastered that! How close are crochet & netting? I've never netted, but seen & have some crochet that looks like net. I crochet & do Tunisian, but not netting. It's a fascinating subject.
