ARGH

I'm at the end of a allergy flare. Judging by what I ate over the last few days this was probably someone "borrowing" some of the food I store in the work canteen. Yes my allergy to gluten is such that we have to have two sets of butter at home, those minor crumbs of bread cause my stomach problems and then I have two days of bad and today I had ( Read more... )

Poor you. Have a hug! (see icon) How many people have access to the canteen? If it's not that many, can you have a polite but firm word with them, to prevent this from happening in the future, or will one or more just not listen?

I have a recipe for carrot cake, that my gluten intolerant ex housemate loves. Admittedly, it involves actually baking it, as opposed to just get something from a shop. If you want to, I'll post or e-mail the recipe to you.

Thanks for the hug. About 30 people have access to the canteen and minor pilfering is rife. It would be fine if they would just take what they need without putting a knife back in. There are notices up saying not to take other people's food and no-one really pays attention.

I think you gave me that recipe, himself isn't really a cake person and I miss just getting a single slice of whatever as a treat.

I keep trying to remind myself that I've got better, reduced sinus attacks and lost weight on the gluten-free regime.

It seems like you need a mini-fridge, locked and chained to your desk, to keep your food gluten-free...

Yup, though my local Italian restaurant sometimes does gluten-free tiramisu (as well as having a good chunk of his menu gluten-free)

((hugs)) I feel for you and totally understand. I'm a diabetic and I would SO love to be able to sit down with a bowl of Ben and Jerry's ice cream. Course, a whole bowl would likely send me to the hospital, but there are days when it might be worth it. Still, I try to be sensible. Sometimes I get their little trial sizes that have something like 2 or 3 tablespoons in them. It's a taste of the fast life there. I have a few ladies who come in at work looking for gluten free recipes. There's not a lot out there. Dr Gott has a no sugar no flour diet plan that kind of fits in with me, but I'm not sure how it would work with gluten allergies. Don't worry, though. You're not alone in your frustrations. =0)

I don't mind much cooking but it's not being able to just walk into somewhere and pick up a nice cake or something like that is annoying.

Gluten free girl has a blog, and a book on gluten free living + some book reviews on the topic.

Librarything has a few books tagged with gluten free There are a fair few books on the topic, some better than others!

Someone on my twitter list gets fibro flares from eating wheat. But every now and then she decides it's worth it.

In my case gluten= two days of stomach cramps and running to the toilet plus swollen stomach so it's actually not worth it. I almost wouldn't mind if it was intentional. However accidental poisoning happens at least once a month.

I just keep reminding myself that I don't have as much sinus problems and have lost a fair bit of weight.

Just as a slight aside, I make absolutely kick ass gluten-free brownies...and might possibly be persuaded to bring one to the next meeting in Curved Street :)
