The Terrible Agony of Writing Somewhere

Feb 19, 2008 13:32

I should be working on an assignment about national identity in Italian cinema, but in a great bout of procrastination, Chapter 13 of Somewhere has magically rocketed well past the 7,000 word count and shows little sign of slowing down ( Read more... )

Don't you wish you could turn in fanfiction instead of homework? What a wonderful world that would be!

As for the end of the fic, I guess I'm not entirely sure if I know what you're going for - something bittersweet? - but I think sticking to your story's integrity is better then pasting on some out-of-place happy ending. I wonder if I know the fic you're thinking of too, because I remember reading a very bittersweet DeiSaku which the author was then persuaded to continue in another fic, and, uh... it's not a bad fic, you know? She's a really good writer. But in a way, I honestly feel like the story made more sense with that bittersweet ending.

Anyway, you should do whatever you need. I'm sure you will. ^^

If someday I ever get to be in a teaching position, handing in fanfiction will not only be encouraged, but will also be awarded bonus marks. ;)

Yes, I'm thinking the ending is quite bittersweet. I'll probably keep it that way, but not entirely sure it'll be a crowd-pleaser. I haven't actually read any other DeiSaku fics to be honest - have promised not to until I've finished Somewhere! The ending of a Tenten-centric fic I wrote a few weeks ago got some mixed feelings, and that's what got me worried...

You're absolutely right though -- I really should just stick to the original plan. Thanks! :D

If you cant find a place where a chapter break would work well, then I say keep it whole. 7k isnt that huge (to me anyway, who has chapters from 9 to over 15k!) and I think a lot of readers like longer chapters, even though they take longer to read, because they feel like it was more worth the wait ( ... )

Thank you for the encouragement! :D I think you're right about keeping the chapter the longer length... Personally I prefer shorter chapters so it's easier to take breaks while reading, but I definitely keep readers waiting long enough that they probably deserve a lot more! :P

I actually haven't read Silver Lining... *guilty face* I'm waiting until I've finished Somewhere before reading any DeiSaku fics. (It's meant as motivation but... I'm a bit of a lazy writer.) I'm going to stick with the originally planned ending, even though it likely won't make everyone happy. But really, it's the only way I could see the series ending!

Guess I'll just have to write it and see! :O

I think its kinda cool that youre waiting to read deisaku fics, it just means you wont be influenced by anything, consciously or not.

I do hope you get around to reading Silver Lining one day, just keep in mind its a sequel to my fic Perception so for the best understanding I would recommend that one first. You definitely should also read Korinacaffeine's Found. :D

Perception, Silver Lining, and Found will be the first fics on my to-read list once Somewhere is finished! :D
