OK, I have a piece of awesome news.  An awesome new, if you will.  On Friday I'm going to Canada to see Hannah's sister, who lives in Ontario.  I have NEVER BEEN TO NORTH AMERICA BEFORE.

But what makes this twenty times more exciting is that while we're there, we're going to be flying over for a weekend in New York!!  Hannah's uncle and aunt have a ( Read more... )

I thought you might need to help dig yourself out from under that LANDSLIDE of giddy clichés!

(This is bringing back memories of my first, completely overwhelming trip to Manhattan at age 25. It seemed I couldn't walk ten paces without coming smack up against something I'd (a) seen in a film; (b) read about in a book; (c) heard people talk about my whole adult life or (d) all three.)

I know, right? It's going to be like walking into part of my own head or something.

Super cool!

I hope you like Canada too, but NYC is my home--I lived in Hell's Kitchen for 11 years and cried when I had to leave.

Jaywalking=crossing against the light or not at a crossing. Used to be New Yorkers would all do that all the time, but they've been cowed a bit :-(

I think you will find it a surprisngly friendly city.

For the hotdogs, Nathan's is the traditional recommendation, but they closed their big Times Square branch some time ago and now just have the Coney Island one and some outlets shared with Dunkin Donuts and Baskin Robbins, like storefront versions of mall food courts.

Where is the apt.? Neighborhoods are part of the essence of NYC, as in many great cities, so you should eat in and wander around the particular neighborhood a bit to get a feeling for its particular ambience, whatever it is.

I'm not entirely sure where it is, but I think someone mentioned Midtown West, so I guess not a million miles from where you lived. Thanks for all your tips!

Not at all far, no :-) That's one of the euphemistic designations for the neighborhood--the other one is Clinton.

Most of Manhattan is now covered by Google Street View, so when you get the street address you can peer at blurry pics taken from a moving vehicle. I should warn you this is addictive.

I recommend Smalls for jazz over Birdland...it's a tiny basement club in the West Village (right by 7th avenue) with a much better vibe. Beforehand you might try to grab dinner at Po, an Italian restaurant on Cornelia Street--they have three bar seats open first come first serve. Also good for eats around there is Salt, on Macdougal. And if you can make a trip to the boroughs, the Noguchi museum in Queens is great, and the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens very nice.

Oh, and also, if it's nice out, you should walk over (well, at least half-way over) the Brooklyn Bridge, by City Hall. It's near Chinatown and Little Italy, so you could spend a morning or afternoon wandering about that area.

Dude! Walk completely over the Brooklyn Bridge, turn around and go right back up Fulton Street and eat pizza at Grimaldi's! But make sure you bring cash, they don't do credit. Nor do they do slices, so expect to get a small. There's alos a hand-made ice cream place across the street and the Telectroscope another block past that. Say hi to Old Blighty while visiting NYC!
