Give Up
We finally gave in and cleaned the chimney so that we could have a small fire in the wood stove. That plus cutting some of the low hanging branches has helped get more sun and heat into the house ( Read more... ) -
WV Porch
We now hve replaced all three post on the back porch. The originals were drifting down hill. We now have another set of block pylons uphill of the originals and put a 6 x 6 timber connecting it to the original pylon. A photo would help.

kayaking in circles
We tried a new lake today since the river was really low and not appealing. Unfortunately, when you can circumnavigate the entire lake in 40 minutes, the lake is too small. We will go back to the bigger lake next time. -
Organic
I enjoyed reading the Barbara Kingsolver book, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. It has made me more comfortable with my decision to go whole hog with our local not quite CSA, Horse &Buggy Produce. The produce meat, fish, and eggs come from the Menonites in tn Shenandoah Valley. So there are multiple farmers and farms involved ( Read more... ) -
No wimps on this hike
Lead a 12 mile hike today with a 2000' elevation gain and loss. Because the weather forecast yesterday was for rain most of the day, only 1 person joined us. But we never saw a drop of rain. We had a bit of overcast, with occasional sun, and a brisk wind when on the ridge. Sounds like an extremely nice day for a hike. Too many wimps. -
Chainsaw certification
To use a chainsaw in the National Forest or in a National Park, which is where the whole Appalachian trail lies, one must be certified by the Forest Service. So this past weekend, we re-certified. One day of mostly sitting for the lectures plus some demonstrations. Then a second day when everyone had to show what they could actually cut. There was ( Read more... ) -

Tough Snow
We went x-c skiing up the Sharp Top bus road with Eric and Sammi today. Eric had scales and we were using waxable skis. The snow had a really tough breakable crust (from a melt or freezing rain a while back) and lots of tracks walking all over the bus road ( Read more... )
